Today is the kind of day I both loath and love about this business. We have, in our hands, the only existing vault materials for a horror film that many love and have wanted for years to be done right on home video. I'm assigned to the task. The excitement is overwhelming just to SEE the film and find out what is in the cans. The "loath" part is usually the bad news where we find out it was improperly stored, torn, shredded, faded or whatever... But, we'll find out. Synapse will MAKE THIS WORK! 2K scan work commence!

As I said in the Scream thread, Prom Night seems too mainstream for Synapse, so I'm still thinking that Blood Rage (1987) may be the second slasher.

Currently freaking out.

More than just about any other film, I have DREAMED of Curtains finally coming to Blu-ray. You have to assume that even if the print has damage, it will still be in the correct aspect ratio and an obvious step up from the faded VHS master they tossed on DVD. It's a good sign that Synapse said the canister has not been opened since 1983.

I've never watched this movie and I'm excited. I've heard nothing but praise for it. I tried watching the crappy DVD version but couldn't deal with it. Maybe I'll try again.

Great news. Lots of people want this flick thats for sure. I watched that crappy bootleg DVD and really didn't see what was so great about the movie. It was ok, maybe I just need to see a better version. So I'll get this went it comes out.

CATHY'S CURSE would make a good companion release to CURTAINS - both feature creepy dolls that seem to come alive. The film itself is far from a masterpiece but it's got loads of atmosphere going for it.

First statement:

This will be amazing! It would be made even more perfect with the original ending and other scenes from the first cut of the film.

Synapse Films response:

...your dreams are certainly our dreams but, right now, all signs point to every bit of that stuff [original ending, first cut scenes] being thrown out and destroyed because of vault space/fees some years ago. We have the paperwork that shows it was ordered destroyed... including the original work print of the film that was 105 minutes and on two 3/4" U-MATIC tapes that some genius decided wasn't necessary to keep. We're remaining hopeful, however, that this material exists somewhere. But, I wouldn't hold my breath.

More Synapse Films comments/details:

We are in search of trailers, etc. The vault may have done stuff, but I want to make sure we can successfully do a 2K transfer on this baby first.

...the film was shot open matte, so the film is labelled that way because it wasn't shot with anamorphic lenses. This film was clearly shot to be projected at a standard 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Selected sequences in the IP are actually hard matted on the element in 1.85:1... not uncommon at all, but it makes me wonder if the hard matted sequences may be from the previous shot portions of the film from the other director.

The film ISN'T full frame, though, so we would never do that anyway [give viewers an option to chose between full screen and widescreen]. There are hard matted areas on some of the scenes of the IP. And boom mics are present on others.

Glad to see a title from my slasher wishlist coming from the very company I hoped would release it. Synapse is the best, and I'd love to see their other slasher acquisition be one that's on my list as well.
