Salt 2
Quote:
If you've seen Salt you understand why everyone comes out of it talking about potential sequels-- and if you haven't, don't worry, that's all I'm spoiling here. But when I was at the junket for Salt about a month ago we all pestered pretty much everyone involved about sequel potential, and each of them gave the same vague "We'll see how it does, but I'd love to do it" response. At the time no one seemed to know how a female-driven spy movie might perform at the box office, or even if audiences though Angelina still had what it takes to be a convincing action hero.
But with Salt inching toward $100 million domestic, now's the time to start talking sequels for real. According to The Los Angeles Times everyone involved is still gun ho about the idea, but Sony may be more skeptical because the movie hasn't yet fully opened overseas, and the movie still cost $110 million, with the sequel likely to cost more. Jolie isn't committed to any other projects at the moment though-- she told us at the junket that she's "just mommy" now while Brad works-- and director Philip Noyce could likely be talked back on board. Screenwriter Kurt Wimmer is apparently coming up with ideas too. Really, all they need now is the money.
I was an unabashedly big fan of Salt and would love to see where they can take the franchise next, especially if they learn a few lessons from the flaws of the first film. Unless the movie performs particularly disastrously internationally it seems like a sequel is a pretty good bet, giving Evelyn Salt the chance to truly be the new, female Bourne.
