E3 2010: What 3D Brings to Racing Games (IGN)
Quote:
Criterion admits it still has some work to do on the 3D implementation for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, but it already looks impressive. The 3D isn't in your face, though the plan is to have some objects flying towards your field of vision in the midst of massive car crashes. Mostly, the 3D has more subtlety to it -- so much so that a minute into a chase, I already forgot I was watching something in 3D. It seems natural. And I found myself better able to anticipate calamities, dodging oncoming traffic with ease. This 3D isn't a gimmick in NFS; it's an advantage. I haven't found that to be true of many 3D-capable games.

To kick off Electronic Arts' E3 press conference today, Criterion Games announced Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, a new entry in the series inspired by Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit released for the original PlayStation 12 years ago.
Creative director Craig Sullivan presented the game, saying Criterion intends to "take Need for Speed back to its roots," but also "re-imagine it for a connected generation." The game allows players to compete against each other online, playing as either the racer or the pursuing cop, and will also have full career modes for both the racer and cop as well. The game will also have a new feature called Need for Speed Autolog, which allows players to compare a number of different records with individual friends.
The live demo showed two players in a head-to-head cop vs. racer match, with lots of trademark Need for Speed powersliding going on. It took place on a rural track with a lot of trees on the side, and appeared to occasionally fork into separate paths temporarily. The cop player could apparently call in for road block, spikes, and helicopter support, although it was a little unclear how it worked in the game. The demo ended with the cop car rear-ending the racer, causing that car to crash in typically violent Criterion fashion.
The New Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 16.

Here are the first facts about EA's Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit:
- The career can be completely or played as a cop for speeding. Before each race, one decides for a role
- Cop and racers have different special abilities that you select with the Cross of the digital controller. The cop can ignite such an EMP bomb, the speeders can make himself invisible on the map or create a twin, the cop confused.
- The choice of vehicles ranges from "hot" to "hot". So there are invariably horsepower sports cars, muscle cars and exotics there - for example, a Lamborghini Murcielago, Lamborghini Reventon, or Ford GT.
- The damage model will not be as detailed as in the fantasy vehicles, the Burnout games. Basic restrictions are the vehicle manufacturer.
- Online eight players can participate. Anyone can opt for a role, so it can also come to chase a speeder and seven cops.
