Great Escape, The Sting, etc., are pretty much the standard no-reason studio reissue, now that Cinemark's been getting audiences for the "real" restoration premieres, and studios want to keep visibility alive for their anniversary core classics.

But Mary Poppins and 20K have both reportedly had recent all-new studio restorations for Blu shown at the El Capitan, which is likely what they'll be "premiering" nationally, and.....you know what THAT means in the winds, don't we kiddies?

the 4K restoration of 20,000 Leagues is pretty well documented online, but I had no idea that Disney and it's restorers were that far along with the restoration of 'Mary Poppins' - I am very curious in how the DCP will look.

I wasn't aware that Disney had finished their Poppins restoration either, at this point, I'm just wishfully leaping to logical assumptions--Disney's not Warner or Fox, and they don't just show off their classics on Fathom for the seasonal what-the-heck of it.

(They might show an unrestored version as a "warmup" to build audience identifcation for the restored 20K, but it'd be unusual; they're not as experienced at this whole Fathom-event thing as Warner is with their pre-disk Oz and Singin' events.)

this isn't Fathom though - Cinemark doesn't do satellite feeds or the dreaded DVD, bluray presentation route that some theater chains do. However since 'Mary Poppins' is the jewel crown for the Disney studio, I'm surprised that Cinemark got the license or an actual DCP of this, unless I'm wrong. I'd think that Walt Disney would do a week long theatrical run of 'Mary Poppins' before it's bluray release.

Our Cinemark does both Fathom operas and the disk-bound (eg. Yellow Submarine) and non-disk DCP's, but not all in the chain do.
Not sure which of the two this is, but Cinemark as its own chain has started their own ball rolling on the classic revivals--It's true that Disney would let us know if it was coming back officially, eg. Finding Nemo and Lion King, so I assumed it was a promotional one-night event.

did anyone see "Mary Poppins" - I couldn't make it out to the screening.

I'll go, hell or high water to '20,000 Leagues' next Thursday.
