Thumbs up Joaquin Phoenix Says OSCAR Race Is Bull****

In a recent article published by Yahoo! Movies...

Joaquin Phoenix Says Oscar Race Is Bull****

Quote:
If you've been following Joaquin Phoenix closely the past few years, you may have seen this coming.

The 37-year-old actor is getting a lot of Oscar buzz for his performance as a paint thinner-swilling WWII vet who takes up with the founder of a controversial new religion in "The Master." But Phoenix could care less about lobbying for a golden statuette.

"I think it's bull****," he said recently in Interview Magazine when asked what he's going to do when he's put on the awards circuit for "The Master." "I don't want to be a part of it," Phoenix went on to say, adding, "I don't believe in it. It's a carrot, but it's the worst-tasting carrot I've ever tasted in my whole life. I don't want this carrot. It's totally subjective. Pitting people against each other . . . It's the stupidest thing in the whole world."

[Related: Joaquin Phoenix a no-show as Paul Thomas Anderson jokes at 'The Master' press conference]

It's not like he's speaking from lack of experience. The man has, after all, done the whole dog-and-pony show twice before. He was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actor category in 2001 for "Gladiator" and nominated again for Best Actor in 2006 for "Walk The Line." "It was one of the most uncomfortable periods of my life when 'Walk the Line' was going through all the awards stuff and all that," he told Interview in a Q&A that covered many more Phoenix-related topics than just his disdain for awards show campaigning. "I never want to have that experience again. I don't know how to explain it—and it's not like I'm in this place where I think I'm just above it—but I just don't ever want to get comfortable with that part of things."

[Related: Joaquin Phoenix studied captive animals for 'The Master' toilet-smashing scene]

"The Master," in theaters now, is director Paul Thomas Anderson's thinly-veiled telling of the origins of Scientology. The story is told through the lens of Phoenix's mentally disturbed character who battles addiction with the help of a religious leader, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, and his wife, played by Amy Adams. The film won high marks when it was shown at both the Venice and Toronto film festivals less than two months ago and has received predominately glowing reviews -- earning 85 percent approval from critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

It's not entirely surprising that Phoenix is scoffing at the culture of awards season. He has done some odd things in recent years. He announced he was quitting acting in 2008 only to show up in a strange trip-of-a-mockumentary a few years later called "I'm Still Here." And then there's his legendary appearance -- or lack thereof -- on Letterman, when Phoenix, with sunglasses and unwieldy facial hair, waxed incoherent.

Beyond "The Master," Phoenix is set to appear in three films in the next two years.

I actually applaud him for his honesty, yet I too wish he showcased his feels in a more constructive manner Loved Phoenix' acting in Gladiator and Walk The Line

And I agree. Who gives a **** about a bunch of puffed up celebrities getting on stage and stroking each other's egos.

Congratualtions, Meryl Streep, you did a good job, again...again. Now shut the **** up and go to your next job.

Because it's a great honor to win an Academy Award. In many cases, it's the pinnacle of an actors career.

lol, if that's the 'great honour' for an actor, then they truly are wrapped up into the pathetic marketing. J6P are the people who decide what movies they like with their wallets, while the Academy are a bunched of jumped up, out of touch morons looking for 'artistic' efforts to praise.

They can take a dive off a damn cliff. They got zilch relevance imo to the average cinema goer and is just a pompous event for stars to go to. If an actor spends his whole life hoping to achieve an Oscar to reach the 'pinnacle' of their career, then they really should re-evaluate their goals.

I really do applud him for coming out to say what he has and expose it for what it is, which is just a complete farce. Him and Mickey Rourke are possibly my two favourite guys in Hollywood for the fact they're willing to piss off the damn establishment by telling them where to stick their crap.

Acting is their profession, and I assume most want to be recognized for great work. Much like almost any profession, people who do an outstanding job are normally distinguished for the job they do. Acting is no different. That's what the award shows are for, to give them the proper recognition they deserve. I personally love watching the Golden Globes, Academy Awards, and Emmy's. I obviously have a big interest in film and TV shows, and I love rooting for my favorite actors/films/shows.

Others have poo-pooed the Oscars in the past, but they show up to get theirs anyway. Out of the hundreds/thousands who have won, who actually stayed home out of spite?

Katherine Hepburn
Marlon Brando (who was cuckoo by the time he won)
George C. Scott (stayed home to watch a hockey game)

Even this guy went --twice.

of course, they're all hypocrites, but still doesn't make the awards any less stupid and worthless except for a bunch of actors mentally masturbating their egos the whole time for a rigged show.

Watch ten times more shouting if it isn't even nominated.

(At least we're spared one bit of shouting if The Master isn't.)

it is extremely political process The Oscars, back scratching etc, This has been a determinate factor and to me don't define who the great actors/tresses are,
BUT I think the establishment has some merrit. I am always hanging out for the other categories.

If I were an Actor, I would say to me it would be an honour to even be nominated.

Can't say I blame him. He was robbed of an Oscar for his spot-on portrayal of Johnny Cash!

This is amazing, lol...

Quote:
The scene in which Johnny Cash pulls the sink off the wall was not scripted; Joaquin Phoenix actually pulled it off the wall.
