Blu-ray Champion

![]() Some original store bought movies will not play on a computer DVD-ROM or BD-ROM drive because of special copy protection technology The movie industry can now make Blu-ray and DVD movies that are unable to playback at all on a Notebook computer or desktop computer that contains a BD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive. The reason for doing this is to prevent consumers and pirates from making a copy of a Blu-ray or DVD on their PC. If the optical disc movie will not play at all on a computer, then the theory is it makes it impossible to make a backup copy of the movie. The problem is when an original store bought movie contains this security feature it prevents the movie from playing back on any Notebook or desktop PC, then consumers are forced to playback the movie they purchased on a standalone Blu-ray or DVD player that is not computer based. For example the movie One Night with the King that was released on standard 480i DVD back on January 30th 2007 by 20th Century Fox will not play on any of my computer BD-ROM drives or DVD-ROM drives since it has a special security feature that disables playback on a computer. To play the movie one has to place it in a standalone Blu-ray or DVD player. The good thing is that only some studios are doing this for some movies. If all DVD’s and Blu-ray’s were encoded with this security feature then computer BD-ROM and DVD-ROM players would be useless features for playing back store bought movies. Not being able to playback a store bought Blu-ray or DVD on a computer will greatly increase the demand for streaming services like VUDU. quote “Now, lets be clear here, we are taking about a genuine, legitimate DVD disc not working in a PC, not a pirated disc or a download via a torrent. Protect DVD-Video protects a DVD by basically making it un-playable in a DVD drive that's in a Windows-based PC (I've no information on whether this also locks out Linux users - I would imagine that it does).” http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/p...ter-owners/114 |
