Default You'll always have a Blu-Ray player because....

In a period of uncertainty we live in of who will win the format war the question of "will i get stuck with these flicks if my side fails" has come up. And in reading some opinions from other forums online, I saw an interesting reply to a thread about the PS3 and BR movies. Alot of people fear early adoption because, lets face it...If say Toshiba where to pull out right now...what would we be left with in HDDDVD? But I got to thinking, If Blu-Ray "failed" per say..(don't see it happening) well, those movies would still play in ps3...and ps3 would go on, regardless of the movie industries ideas. If you're Blu-Ray player breaks, you can always buy a ps3 to replace it...and those should be around about 7-10 years. So, that has got to be an easy decision & probably one reason why More studio's back Blu-Ray over HDDVD. I also think when consumers are trying to rationalize which way to go, this will play a part in many peoples decision. That and the obvious fact that they garner a majority of CE industry & movie studio support.

There are just too many ups to Blu-Ray...that it most likely can not fail.
The flip side is that HDDVD could fold quite easily, Yes...Toshiba & M$ have invested alot of money in this, but are they really getting an ROIC off of this? If most who begin with HD discs start via PS3, it could leave them scrambling to try and figure out what to do. Also making the 360 Ad-on just that, and "Ad-on" creates choice. A choice we are relying on joe-six-pack to make when he's already satisfied with DVD. But if the device (PS3) already does it, and he's already paid for it anyways...well then we have a much bigger differance here.

However this is all concidering ps3 will be a huge success. Most said ps2 wouldn't be able to overcome Sega...wow they blew them out of the water in like the first 8 months. And Sega had like a 2 yr head start.

Worst case scenario is: Blu-Ray becomes yet another proprietary format exclusive to the PS3.

Personally, I doubt that's going to happen.

This is where I come into a dilenma of sorts.

Let's say I give into my HD lust and I go ahead and buy a Toshiba player today. Take her for a test whirl, like it, whatever, buy some movies, and move forward.

Let's say the most likely scenario hopefully happens and I see the real Blu-Ray start to show itself come the end of October. If that goes down, that means I'm almost certainly buying either the Sony player or possibly even the Elite.

Now, if you look at the slate of projected movies coming out on BOTH formats between now and the end of the year...pretty much most of the movies on HD-DVD right now are coming over to Blu-Ray anyways. HD-DVD will be left with very few exclusives, if any, outside of the stray Universal releases.

So then you have an interesting contest: Which version of a movie ends up being better?

I think one of the first "radar" movies has to be Training Day, a current reference HD-DVD.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is: If BR gets their act together...it starts making less sense to have two players when the one player will basically be there to play Universal strays and other odds and ends.

I think we all know that the Toshiba hardware and functionality definitely leaves something to be desired. The BR hardware will be better without question. Even the Samsung functions better right now, in terms of speed, efficiency, response times, etc. etc.

In other words, it functions like a good piece of CE vs. a poor man's HTPC.

So that's where I sit right now as I contemplate taking an HD-DVD player for a test whirl. These are the kinds of things I think up because I feel you HAVE to think long term with any of this.

^ Definately agree, But the only "test" I would personally concider would be the 360 ad on, Only because My 360 aint doing anything else these days. And it should be pretty cheap.

I think the older i get I am pretty much over the gaming thing, but the ps3 will be a great value IMO so it will be purchased as a secondary blu-ray player with the "occassional" game played in it. The fact it's fully backward compatible doesn't hurt things either.

I will definately be buying the BDP-S1 on launch day, And I hope it's the right decision. But for me, Toshiba's offerings...no matter how good the PQ is off those discs, isn't enough to bring me over. I am pretty picky on player performance (speed, functionality etc) and While I wouldn't even concider the Tosh because it looks like it's from the 80's, it functions like it's from then too!

Ironically, speaking as a gamer first and foremost, and primarily a PC gamer? The PS3 doesn't have a damned thing coming out that gets my toes tingling. At least not until well into 2007.

I already own a 360 for any console strays that might interest me, like football titles and other odds'n'ends like that.

I have to own both.

As much as we toss about Universal being the only hold out the truth is there are plenty of smaller studios that are HD DVD only like the Weinstiens company and they will play a part in what I wish to watch. In fact they own the rights to a Directors Cut of Kill Bill.

Neither format will leave users out of luck. They both are compatible with DVD and even if there are no more recorded movies for the format you will still be able play back your own content provided you have a HD camcorder and authoring software.

This isn't like Minidisc (which I bought) where when it died it supported NOTHING else but MD.

Both formats have enough legacy support to survive for years without any new prerecorded content.

I am probably going to get an HD DVD player real soon. At the price it is, it is worth it just to mess with.

Should be fun.

I still use my Minidisc - it is a recordable format and the blanks are still available, so there are never ending possibilities

I also hope that Bluray gets it together. BD50 or better codec is needed it would seem...

When all is said and done a lot of us would probably be content to support both formats. Why wait for great HD content when you can get it today? When Blu-ray delivers I'll be at my local store with my wallet open. If you don't have financial restrictions then I say go for it. In the end you'll be able to enjoy each and every HD movie you want regardless of format.

I may jump into HDDVD but it won't be on these players.
I can only see the 360 ad-on being a forseeable option because My xbox360 does nothing but collect dust, and It had better start doing something for me. It should be relatively inexpensive (it better had be or why bother) I'll probably buy very few game titles for it once ps3 drops, and The Tosh players are just Bogus IMO. I've pretty much only kept my 360 this long because I know I won't get dirt for it, Theres an HDDVD drive on the way and Halo3.

halo 3 wow wow wow. SIGHS Halo 2 wasn't that special especially not compared to the first. The 3rd one in my opinion will just be another boring rehash as well.

To be honest, I see HD DVD as a proprietary format for Universal pictures...

But soon they will crack and release BD disks... muahahaha!
