French distributors BAC Films have revealed that they are planning to release on Blu-ray director Bernardo Bertolucci's The Sheltering Sky (1990), starring Debra Winger, John Malkovich and Campbell Scott. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is September 11.

In 1991, the film won BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography (Vittorio Storaro) and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score - Motion Picture (Ryûichi Sakamoto, Richard Horowitz).

Are you tourist or traveler? Kit (Debra Winger) and Port Moresby (John Malkovich) find the distinction important. A tourist wants comforts of home. A traveler seeks adventure. Kit and Port are travelers, drawn by desire and destiny to the Sahara in an attempt to recapture the love they once shared.

Note: In the U.S., The Sheltering Sky is distributed by Warner Brothers, but the DVD release is out of print.

Note: BAC initially announced the film for Blu-ray release in 2009, but it was pulled from their schedule. This is one of my all-time favorite films (with one of the greatest soundtracks ever done) and I will try to do a review regardless of whether there are forced subs or not.

According to a customer review on Amazon France, this release has forced subtitles, which is such a shame!

There is also a Japanese disc, but I would wait to see if there is any optical censoring before buying. Also, I haven't seen the film, but my understanding is that there could be non-English dialogue, so that would require English subtitles:

No wonder, it is a BAC release after all. They are the worst.
