United Kingdom Wild at Heart (David Lycnh)

Wild at Heart Blu-ray 4 June 2012

Wild at Heart Blu-ray

Wild at Heart Blu-ray Review

David Lynch's Wild at Heart has received a preliminary release date: October 25th.

Julia Monelle:
Quote:
Elvis devotee Sailor Ripley (Nicolas Cage), 23, and his devoted lover Lula (Laura Dem), 20, are on the run in the deep south - mostly from her crazy psychotic Mother, and as the twisted events unfold, the jaw. He commands respect and wears his snake skin jacket like a badge. He's also in the wrong place at the wrong time too often. She struggles between love for her mother and love for her man; is she being led astray or not?

The peripheral characters are the kind of outrageous characterisations that seem to be part of a dream or a nightmare - obscure, dangerous, menacing, and eccentric people that you can imagine but never encounter. This strangeness and perversity is characteristic of Lynch's work where there is no clear division between good and evil, just some kind of kind of surreality.

When casting, Nicolas Cage wasn't even auditioned - he already had a reputation that put him in the slightly-surreal-and-definitely-nuts bracket. Laura Dern was also ideal for Lynch, partly because he wanted Dern's real mother - Dianne Ladd - to play the part of her screen mother.

This is a love story typical of David Lynch, who described it as a violent comedy. The book by Barry Gifford appealed to him so much that he wrote the screenplay in just six days, but then this is the man whom Mel Brooks described as "Jimmy Stewart on Mars" - appropriate considering this is meant as a homage to The Wizard of Oz, the original road movie.

Great news! Let's hope this is the UNCUT (or "unfogged") version.

Excellent news. David Lynch is doing quite well on Blu-ray.

Wild At Heart has also been announced in France along with Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. So I'm wondering what the chances are of FWWM being released in the UK as well.

Wild at Heart will be a Pan-European release handled by Universal. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Lost Highway will be handled by MK2. For any of these films to get a UK release, a secondary distributor must step up.

Was never tempted by the French disc of this on HDDVD so hopefully we'll be getting a real treat with some extras.

Not much extra on the Nordic disc:

It does mention them though so hopefully it's a port and more of the SE DVD. Lots of subtitles there too so I reckon it'll be a universal disc from err... Universal.

Thanks Pro-B, I just saw this so of course I wondered. It would be wonderful not to have to shell out for the French discs, but I have a feeling they'll be the only game in town for a long while...

Damn it, next year is the 25th Anniversary of Blue Velvet. Given that and Dennis Hopper's passing I hope someone releases it...

What was the "unfogged" reference to? Was that ever done to Wild at Heart? I know Lynch did it to Mulholland Drive for home video release.

Blue Velvet is one of my favourite films, so I'd most definitely welcome a 25th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray.

I've not seen Wild at Heart, but I think there's a scene where somebody has their head blown off that was "fogged" due to pressure from the MPAA? I imagine the uncut scene was included with all the other deleted footage on the Lime Green boxset, though. I wonder if it'll make it over to the Blu-ray release.

unfortunately "Blue Velvet" is trapped on MGM.
hopefully it will get released soon or licensed out to an entity like Criterion.
Criterion has already grabbed some MGM titles, and I can't imagine they wouldn't be interested in that film.
it's gotta be one of the most critically acclaimed of MGM's contemporary films.

I agree - I think this would be an obvious title for Criterion to go after, given the current state of MGM.

Per IMDb:

Quote:
To avoid an X-rating in the USA, David Lynch added a smoky haze and spark impact to the shots where
[Show spoiler]Bobby Peru (Willem Dafoe) shoots himself with a shotgun
and blows
[Show spoiler]his
head off. The second shot has the same smoky haze on it to hide the chunk of
[Show spoiler]his
head flying though the air. The effect made the removal of
[Show spoiler]his
head from
[Show spoiler]his
body less clear and muted the blood and gore and got the movie an "R" rating. The uncut version was released outside the USA, but since the David Lynch-approved DVD came out in the U.S. (the shot was altered there), the censored transfer has been used on worldwide DVD releases as well, while most of the versions with the bloodier version of the scene have gone out of print. Oddly enough, the more graphic version is still shown in TV airings in the U.S. on the Sundance Channel.
I saw a screening at IFC center that was uncensored, so there is hope.

The first US DVD release and the Scandinavian DVD's are UNCUT. The new special edition DVD in the US had this fog censor thing.

Let's hope the UK releases this uncut.

This is true, though there's still no sign of his very underrated The Straight Story coming out. This would look great in HD

It arrived yesterday from Germany and it's still "fogged" and there are no extras whatsoever, though the transfer is very good from what I've seen.

No, there's like 20 different subtitle options and since it's from Universal, it's definitely not locked.
