Hi everyone!
There are lots of great BD releases out there, but what are your 3 absolute favorite BD releases, that are as perfect as they come?? A box set such as The Complete Star Wars Saga, or LOTR also counts as one release, since well, that what it is. Lol However, you may also just choose one out of a set, such as TTT of LOTR. By favorite BD release I mean, everything has to be right, not "just" the movie, the transfer and the audio, but also the extras, and perhaps even the packaging. Close to perfection all around. So, Movie: 4,5-5/5 PQ: 4,5-5/5 SQ: 4,5-5/5 Extras: 4,5-5/5 Take Gladiator (the remastered edition, of course), for instance, it's a great movie, with a superb transfer and killer audio, but the extras are in SD, and to me keep it from being one of my all time favorite releases, where simply everything fell into place. Also, the film is not among my all time faves. My Picks: 1. Star Wars-Episode III-The Revenge of the Sith The film is my all time favorite, and the transfer is gorgeous, as is the audio. Just turn it up a little louder than the previous two, and you are good to go. The extras are also fantastic and in HD, so this is a dream come true to me. Film: 5+/5 Video: 5/5 Audio: 5/5 Extras: 4,5/5 2. Rushmore One of my favorite films ever, and it received a stellar Criterion release. Film: 5/5 PQ: 5/5 probably the most beautiful comedy ever shot AQ: 5/5 Extras: Being a Criterion release, it's packed with great extras, and in HD at that. Brilliant! 3. Wall-E I'd honestly go gay for Wall-E. ![]() Film: 4,5/5 PQ: 5/5 AQ: 5/5 Extras:5/5 the 2 disc edition, of course. The Pixar Story alone is worth the price for the BD. These three are my all time favorites in terms of overall awesomeness. So, what are yours? Please stay polite. All you have to do is choose within the given parameters. Have fun! ![]() |

Choosing my three favorites was no easy task; in compiling the shortlist, I struggled to limit myself to fourteen titles! I decided only to organize these fourteen into categories of three - a cheat, but it's not like anyone can "bop me upside the head" across the Interwebs, so without further ado:
There's gotta be anime 1. Akira -especially for the dynamic, lossless audio track 2. Evangelion 2.22 -especially for the stunning climax 3. Ghost in the Shell (Japan edition, NOT 2.0) -especially for a respectable encode compared to the atrocity squeezed onto the US 2.0's bonus features There's gotta be a damsel in distress 1. Blue Velvet -especially for the 50ish minutes of deleted scenes 2. Sleeping Beauty -especially for DAT ASPECT RATIO 3. The Exorcist -especially for the original theatrical version lookin' fine There's gotta be Criterion 1. By Brakhage -especially for stellar packaging worthy of the superb video transfers 2. The Night of the Hunter -especially for the Charles Laughton Directs The Night of the Hunter feature 3. Pale Flower, Kuroneko, Branded to Kill -especially for introducing (in BtK's case RE-introducing) exceptional Japanese New Wave cinema titles to the American market in great transfers There's gotta be classics 1. Touch of Evil (UK MoC edition) -especially for SHUTTING EVERYONE UP ABOUT ASPECT RATIOS 2. Apocalypse Now (US Full Disclosure edition) -especially for casting out Vittorio Storraro's asinine retroactive 2:1 AR 3. The Third Man (Criterion edition) -especially for giving me the best pick-up line ever (Hey baby, wanna come back to my place and watch The Third Man? It's the Criterion edition, so you know you're in for a rare treat...) ...OK, if I was pressed in a life-or-death improbable scenario, I'd choose Touch of Evil, By Brakhage, and Sleeping Beauty as my three. But don't you all agree that fourteen's more fun than only three?! |

1. Zodiac (2-disc Director's Cut)
David Fincher and Co. put out some of the best blu-ray releases, and this is, in my opinion, their best, and not mention one of my favorite movies. Also, I think the audio on the disc is much better than suggested by this site's review. Film: 5/5 Video: 5/5 Audio: 4.5/5 Extras: 5/5 2. Casablanca (70th Anniversary Edition) One of the best movies ever, glad it got such a fantastic re-release for its 70th anniversary. Film: 5/5 Video: 5/5 Audio: 4.5/5 Extras: 5/5 3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button This movie just keeps growing on me, and the audio/video presentation is phenomenal. Also includes one of the best making-of documentaries that I've ever seen: informative, insightful, and extremely extensive. Film: 4.5/5 Video: 5/5 Audio: 5/5 Extras: 5/5 Honorable Mentions: WALL-E, Modern Times, Kick-Ass, Back to the Future Trilogy, Iron Man, Star Trek, Up, 12 Angry Men, The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Fincher) Last edited by jmbenesh; 10-22-2012 at 03:04 AM. |

1. The Crow - My personal favorite. Glad we finally got a U.S. release. I would have imported the Japanese release if it wasn't so darn expensive.
2. Blade Runner 5 disc set 3. Shawshank Redemption digibook edition - No matter how many times I've seen this on TV, I still had to own it. A fantastic movie that never gets old to me. I'm glad Warner at least gave this release Dolby True HD. Some of their other great movies, like Unforgiven, aren't so lucky. |

This as a daunting task. But after much debate and consideration I'd say these three are my top 3
1. Wall-E -film- 5/5 this film holds such a special place in my heart, such an incredibe movie with an amazing story that touch kids and adults alike. -pq- 5/5. I mean come on its Pixar they can do no wrong. I feel part of this movie it's picture is so crisp and clear I feel as though Wall-E is in room -aq- 4.5/5 I'd give it five but actually it should be five my theater system just lacks ability to play audio to its fullest Extras- 5/5. I love the extras on this pixar went above and beyond here. 2. Get Him to the Greek. -film- 4.5/5 I love this raunchy little flick. It shows Russell Brand at his best and worst. -pq- 4.5/5 I love the clear detail of this film. My only quip is se of the shadowing and coloring are a little lacklustering in parts -aq- 5/5. The songs are loud in all the right places -extras 5/5 From gag reals to documentaries this films got it all 3. Scott pilgrim vs the world: level up addition -film 5/5 this films just awesr action packed yet moving, with those futuristic looking fight sequences this movie is just a good time. -pq 4.5/5 what a visual delight! The color contact to facial details. One of the best I've seen. -aq- 5/5 I felt like I was listening to this in an sctual theater. From the thundering roars during fights to the little sued conversations this movie was music to my ears. -extra- 4.5/5 love the alternative scenes and music videos but not tooo different from the DVD extras. Phew. Sorry about the story book descriptions. Just had to get it all out lol. |

1. The Bourne Trilogy - "This is the rare trilogy with not a bad apple in the bunch, each an expertly-crafted
exercise in suspense, drama, espionage, and action." HDD 2. Lethal Weapon Collection - Still the best of all the buddy cop film franchises. 3. The Godfather Collection - The greatest crime trilogy of all time. |

Best 3 Animation Releases (That I own):
Beauty and the Beast Excellent Digital Transfer, extensive Beyond Beauty documentary, and great soundtrack to blow out on your spekers Lion King Excellent Movie (I shouldn't really count that though as much as I want to, Digital Transfer, and A Memior is an extension of Waking Sleeping beauty which is an excellent featurette Looney Tunes Boatload of extras, Bugs, and very extensive Runner Up: Fantasia (It only lost because of the virtual vault) |

My top three would be:
1. Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2. The PQ and AQ are very good. 2. The Secret World of Arrietty. The PQ of the animation is stunning and it's a very good film (my favorite Ghibli film). 3. Jaws. Excellent movie and it looks great on Blu-ray (audio is good too for an old movie). |
