Since Godzilla has a couple polls I thought I'd give Gamera some love too.
![]() My favorite is easily Gamera 3, with G2 and Guardian of the Universe not far behind. The '90s trilogy absolutely nailed it, and got better as it went on, culminating in G3. The effects are definitely among the best I've seen in a Japanese giant monster movie, cinematography and music (composed by Kow Otani, probably best known for scoring the video game Shadow of the Colossus) are great. The human drama is actually compelling for once and works for the movie, the monster action is fairly sparse but what is there is absolutely killer. For once we get to see how giant monsters duking it out in a city affects the people there. Gamera the Brave is pretty good too, very competently made, but disappointed me because of the expectations I had after the trilogy. While I enjoy the older films for their camp, they just aren't very good movies. Supposedly a 50th anniversary Gamera movie is coming next year, will be interesting to see how that turns out. |
