Default I think HDdvd will die a quick death

In format wars (or format ventures) where a format you often find
that it will continue to sell in small amounts for a few years after the general public and the manufacturers have accepted it's failure.

The difference here is that with most (if not all) of these formats, money was being made on them from day 1 (unless you count expensive advertising ventures). HD-DVD players (Toshiba only) are all being sold at a loss at the moment afaik (BD players are not), so as soon as Toshiba realises that their format has failed, they will stop manufacture of everything hddvd related, since there is no point throwing money at something with no yield.

Minidisc failed outside of Japan, but you still see a little bit of it around because it MADE MONEY. I think, once the war is decided, we won't have to wait at all to see no more HD-DVD stuff around anymore. I wonder whether those blue lasers are recyclable...

Sadly HD-DVD won't, it'll linger around for a long time.

Chances are no, especially with toshiba allegedly making a new xbox 360 with built in hd-dvd drive.

They are failing. They are in desperation mode. The payoff to Paramount. The huge giveaways like Heroes Season 1 included with hddvd 360 addon; free dud player with Toshiba LCD purchase, and possibly cutting prices to which they will be losing a lot of money per player. Pretty soon they'll just give away dud player with a movie purchase. But they are lingering. And they will linger for a long time until something really huge swings the industry way more in favor of Blu-ray.

Sony lost other formats because they did not get or gain the support from mass companies. So you would only see Sony minidisc players, Sony beta players, sony products with pro duo inputs, etc. But this time with Blu-Ray they are branched out through many electronic companies and movie production companies.

That's why the retailers will play a major role in shutting out HD DVD. First Blu-ray needs to extend software sales to at least 4:1 on a weekly basis. Retailers will start to do the rest. Best Buy and Fry's are already starting to show you how it's done. IMO, that's why Target went to the BDA to ask if they wanted to buy the additional retail space. That's how it works.

When Warner or Universal stop releasing HD DVD it will begin to die.

I don't see any other way for it to cease.

On the plus side, we know that Warner is considering 'taking a side' - if the BDA has everything lined up, we may well see it happening in our favour.

Desperate maybe but it's also called doing everything you can to win the format war and that's something Sony and the BDA know nothing about.

No, its called doing everything you can to SURVIVE. HD is in bad, bad shape. It needs to do anything possible just to not sink to the bottom of the ocean. HUGE difference from the BDA's tactics so far.

BDA's tactic? Which one is that? The one where they sit back and watch HDDVD come back from the grave?

You seem to think they are just resting and kicking back? I can assure you one thing, that BDA has a lot more in store then you know. Toshibas desperate move should give you a hint as to things that are happening.

Didn't the 360 and PS3 both originally sell at a loss in order to increase market share?
