That's breaking street date law and if you can contact the right people, you can be handsomely rewarded and that Wal-Mart fined. Studios do not take kindly to stores doing that.

Just saying.

I really wish I could find a newspaper article from my hometown paper from 2002, but my Wal-Mart got fined for putting out the extended DVD edition of The Two Towers almost a full 2 weeks early. The article never specified what movie it was, nor who reported them, but I recall seeing it on the shelf when I was there with a couple buddies. I remember thinking "That's not supposed to be out yet" and none of us had the $$$ to buy it. We were bummed, but moved on.

I doubt Walmart, the biggest media retailer , would even get a notice from the studio.

Especially for breaking it less than 24 hours in advance.

I've heard that sometimes these stores get emails from studios saying to go ahead and put them out early ?
Any one know if this might be the case ?
I'll have to swing by my store and check it out

I worked in management for blockbuster for nearly 3 years and we never got anything like that. It could be different on the strictly sell-thru side though.

4 days actually. it comes out on Friday the 22nd, not tomorrow

and to the guy saying you'll get rewarded. actually no, you'll get a thank you from the CSR you report it too and that's it. Plus the WORST that WM will get is a notice from them saying "hey don't do this"

With retailers, film studios, record labels, and video game developers in such a constant need for exclusivity, I wouldn't be surprised if this did happen. I know that Target has received a few saying to either delay stocking or given the green light to stock something earlier. Especially Monday releases. Those were annoying on top of my other Monday AM duties...

I don't mean someone within the store, I mean the studio or however it is one does this. Maybe this isn't possible anymore, I dunno.

The hobbit has been out for a week at my local Walmart. Employees get confused because some titles have a "home" before the release date and put them out early. Although the box they're shipped in specifies the release date so who knows.

Doesn't this ruin the point of the VUDU pre-order?

Putting a movie out for sale early... a violation of the law? Seriously?! Some of you think it's against the LAW? As in, a criminal offense?

That's hilarious!

I remember getting a notice when working at a video store when Episode 1 came out on VHS that if you broke street date you would not be shipped anymore Lucasfilm merchandise.

YES! Call the police! The FBI! The National Guard! It's a matter of National Security!

*end sarcasm*

I know it used to be that retailers could be fined for breaking this, but I guess that isn't the case these days. Target's system at the check-outs will not allow street-dated items to be sold prior to 8:00am on its intended release day, flagging it and denying the sale. And on all boxes containing street-dated material, it reads that violating the street date can result in no longer receiving shipments from said studio AND possible fines. Dunno if they go as far as fining, but the indication is there.
