Default Samuel L. Jackson slams Shyamalan

Here's a the interview here ---> http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/1...n_2325834.html

Samuel L. Jackson Slams M. Night Shyamalan

While making the interview rounds for Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, Samuel L. Jackson had a few words to say on his collaboration with M. Night Shyamalan in 2000's Unbreakable -- not all of it positive.

When asked by The Huffington Post if we'd ever see a sequel to that film, the actor replied, "There were supposed to be three. I don't know... You'll have to ask the brilliant director who wrote it and didn't do the rest of them."

HuffPo noted that the filmmaker had moved on to films like The Last Airbender, to which Jackson remarked, "I mean, he hasn't made a really good movie since [Unbreakable]."

Does Jackson think there's still a market for Unbreakable 2? "Everybody would be waiting for it, yeah. [The Internet] would be crazy for it. It would trend through the roof now on Twitter. But, yeah, they would. But Quentin makes movies that Quentin wants to see. I don't think M. Night makes movies for the same reason."

Perhaps, as HuffPo speculated, Shyamalan puts too much emphasis on having a twist. "Yeah, there's that. And there's, you know, 'I'm smarter than everybody coming to watch my movie.' Quentin's not that. He's just, 'I want you to love my movie. I want you to love it and enjoy it because this is f***ing cool.'"
__________________________________________________ ________________________________________________

So is that hard to maintain? I'm not conscious of it. I try not to be conscious of it. And I don't choose roles because of it. And, sometimes, people will just attribute stuff to it. It's like Elijah [Price, Jackson's character] in "Unbreakable." You know, people say he's "cool." He's a ****ing breakable nerd. And they go, "That ****ing coat and your hair -- he's just cool." And I'm like, "Really?"

We're never going to see a sequel to that movie, are we? There were supposed to be three. I don't know.

People liked "Unbreakable." You'll have to ask the brilliant director who wrote it and didn't do the rest of them.

He moved on to "The Last Airbender."
I mean, he hasn't made a really good movie since then.

"Signs" was OK.
There's some issues. I didn't like that thing in the cornfield.

I thought it was OK.
I didn't see the Wahlberg one.

"The Happening”?
Yeah.

I haven't either. But wouldn't "Unbreakable 2" be a good career movie for him?
Yeah! Well, he suffered from what happened to Quentin when he made "Jackie Brown.” He didn't make "Pulp Fiction 2," he made "Jackie Brown" -- which is a wonderful ****ing movie.

People love "Jackie Brown."
But it wasn't "Pulp Fiction 2." "Unbreakable" also didn't have the numbers of "I see dead people." That was a problem for him ... for his ego and the studio, also.

I don't remember Tarantino taking a critical hit for "Jackie Brown."
He felt like he did. He was hurt by the fact that people didn't love it. "Pulp Fiction" was loved.

But "Pulp Fiction" is a once-in-a-lifetime-type movie.
It's a standalone film.

If M. Night announced tomorrow that "Unbreakable 2" is going to happen, it would be all over the Internet.
Everybody would be waiting for it, yeah. It would be crazy for it. It would trend through the roof now on Twitter. But, yeah, they would. But Quentin makes movies that Quentin wants to see. I don't think M. Night makes movies for the same reason. Quentin makes movies that are genres that he wants to see. "I like Spaghetti Westerns -- I'm going to write a Spaghetti Western. I like blaxploitation movies, too - so I'm going to make the protagonist black." So, he's got a blaxploitation western with Hong Kong undertones. The "Bullet Ballet" undertones. He wants to see it and I want to see it. I want to be in that kind of movie.

I think M. Night gets too caught up on having to have a twist.
Yeah, there's that. And there's, you know, "I'm smarter than everybody coming to watch my movie." Quentin's not that. He's just, "I want you to love my movie. I want you to love it and enjoy it because this is ****ing cool."

I like SLJ, but that's kinda of d**k thing to say. Personally I like M. Night's films and I know it's all subjective, but it kinda sucks he said this because this could hurt the possibility of there ever being an Unbreakable 2. It is what it is, but this article really does irritate me.

Although, I do however agree that there's always a lot of pressure for a director that releases a BIG movie at the beginning of his or her career to either live up to that movie or automatically make a sequel. I'd love to see an Unbreakable 2, but I'm so happy that M. Night made Signs and The Village because I absolutely love those films. And I know I'm in the minority but I thought Lady in the Water, The Happening and The Last Airbender were fun and entertaining for what they were.

Speaking of, they brought up Unbreakable and the fact that there still isn't a sequel on PARKS AND RECREATION. Pretty funny.

I always wondered why there wasn't a sequel for this film. It performed well both domestically and internationally and still has a strong cult following.

Well you can most likely bank on them not happening now after talking all that trash.

Please don't waste resources making a sequel to that crappy movie.

"The called me Mr. Glass" ok, not Sam's fault for the highly laughable line.

If I was Shyamalan I would reply "well I been wanting to make a second movie but Sam L Jackson is always busy having second hand roles in every movie made in the last 12 years, we can't have him back how can we make the sequel?"

I don't think it's a coincidence that Shyamalan's name is conspicuously absent from the trailer.

I think this is the first trailer that didn't splatter his name in large letters on the screen. I think it's a smart move.

I remember when the Devil trailer premiered in theaters, it looked interesting and then his name pops up and the theater starts laughing. It's happened everytime I went and the trailer pops up.

I noticed that too. Right as I started reading this thread, P&R mentioned Unbreakable 2. Pretty freaky!

Maybe he's a jerk to work with so SLJ didn't care to speak out? I think the comment he made about M. Night thinking he's smarter than his audience is probably the same way he views his actors. That's got to be a hard working environment to be in.

I only really cared for Signs. I didn't go crazy for The Sixth Sense, I really didn't enjoy Unbreakable...and have loathed every other film he's made.

Unbreakable is pretty underrated. Even I didn't particularly care for it my first viewing, but it's fairly unique in its approach as a superhero movie. I didn't really think there was any need for a sequel either. I mean, after the "twist" ending we kind of wrap certain things up. I believe M. Night was going to introduce another villain, but to me that ruins the sort of nice duality of good and bad that the first movie had.

Good for Sam Jackson telling it like it is. He is clearly an actor who was proud of his work in Unbreakable, and is annoyed that the director didn't follow through on his planned trilogy. It had the potential to be the most groundbreaking superhero series ever, but M Night is wasting it away.

Nice to see a great actor slamming an incompetent hack director. Thank goodness Shyamalan didn't make more Unbreakable films, it would have killed me to see Jackson and Willis pissing away their talent on a trilogy. One was bad enough.
