Default Do you keep movies you know you will never watch?

I'm watching Aliens from the anthology set. Great movie. I may never get the urge to put it in again. I love the set so much- I want it regardless. Maybe someday ill have someone over who wants to see it. Generally I decide to buy movies based on their re-watchability.

Just curious--

Not that I can think of, but I am sure I have a few that I could get rid of (particularly my wife's). Problem is that a common BD in a standard case doesn't fetch but a few bucks.

Funny you mention this topic and use aliens as the example as I was just thinking today about picking up the anthology set after reading such good reviews on the quality and saw it was like 30$ at walmart. If I buy it its really only for the love of Alien though, I like Aliens and even alien 3 (hate the 4th) but something about Aliens just has no re watch value for me, I realized that when I bought the old special edition of it years ago and only got like 1-2 views out of it. Alien is just superior in everyway including replay value to me. The thing I dont like about aliens is that it kind of feels lazy to me.

I mean what did James Cameron really have to do? The universe was already created in the first by someone else, the monster design was already created all James Cameron did was direct a bunch of people to run around shooting machine guns at men in alien suits. The queen is awesome I will say that but too much of the movie is boring during repeat viewings. I was listening to the commentary for 2001 and one of the guys mentioned that "they don't do sci fi like this anymore, nowadays its just cowboys and indians in space but instead of the indians the cowboys are shooting at a giant bug or alien" or something along those lines and it aliens was the first thing to pop in my mind. Alien is a masterpiece though, can watch that over and over and its still great.

I almost always find something about a movie that would make me want to rewatch it at some point. On the rare occasions, when I don't, I trade it towards something else.

I generally do 'pulls' every so often so as to get rid of any films that I know I'll never watch again. Usually these include blind buys that I've finally had the chance to watch (and which I've found underwhelming).

Sometimes this may include films I've double or even triple dipped on (I love steelbooks and mediabooks/digibooks). So long as all of the extras have been carried over to later versions of the blu-ray I don't mind losing the earlier version.

But there are exceptions every once in a while. You, yourself mentioned one in particular. I own the Alien Anthology box set and although I believe that I've seen the first three films 6 or 7 times each, (and yes, I can and most probably will view them several more times over the coming years), I've only ever watched the fourth film "Alien Resurrection" once. I'm a big Joss whedon fan, but in all honesty this film just didn't do it for me. However, I'm not about to break up this spectacular box set. So I guess I'll be keeping this movie. This is a rare example of me keeping a film in my collection that I have absolutely no intention of ever watching again.

Having a film library based on re-watchability is by far the smartest move for virtually any collector. I can watch some movies ten or twenty times easy ("The Godfather", "The Godfather Part II", "Blade Runner", "Goodfellas", "Jaws", "Psycho", "A Clockwork Orange", "Pulp Fiction", "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Full Metal Jacket", "Apocalypse Now", "Halloween", "Alien", "Terminator", "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" "Fight Club", "SE7EN", "The Matrix", "Metropolis", "Taxi Driver", "M", "The Dark Knight", "Seven Samurai", "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy" (Extended Editions), "E.T.", "Inception", "The Shawshank Redemption" ...well you get the idea. So yeah, films such as those listed above are 'must owns', at least in my film library because they hold distinct re-watch value for me, but for all the films that I watch in the theatre or on-demand and think "That movie was pretty good, but I really don't have a need to ever watch it again", well there's really no need to buy'em no matter how low the price drops because really ...what's the point? The way I see it, those movies would be taking up valuable shelf space that I'll be needing for films that I'll be wanting to enjoy over and over again for years to come.

I'm sort of doing that lately.

If I know I won't watch it, there's no reason to keep it.

I'm going through this a little bit myself. Even though I only took out 5 movies to trade in, I'm trying to be more selective. Not in the way of just getting my absolute favorites (because that will reduce my library down to 25 hahah), but to just pick up stuff for now on that I'll watch over and over.

So far, I've watched everything I have at least twice.
The five I took out, two of them I'm sure I'll never watch again. One is an extra copy someone gave me, but I already have it and the other two are movies that will be in an upcoming set. I use stuff like this and my DVDs to trade in and get new stuff since I don't have a steady job.

Eh, never is a long time. Will I ever rewatch World's Greatest Dad or Please Give? Probably not but you never know.

And what's the downside throwing them in a box and keeping them on a shelf somewhere?

I'm evaluating which DVDs to keep. Alias season 1/2 I'm keeping as they aren't on Blu. Friends season 1-10 is just fine on DVD, same with Seinfeld. Most DVDs are converted to my iTunes library.

I'll buy whatever I remember being something that I'd want to revisit in some form. I may never know when the urge will hit me, but if it sticks in my head, I'll probably nab it.

Thus, there are movies in my collection I haven't touched in years - about 30% of my total collection remains unviewed - but I'm working on it.

There are certain movies I'll never buy though, because I know I don't want to rewatch those specific ones.

There are definitely a few movies in my collection that i can't imagine revisiting; among them are The Jackal and National Security. However, I dont think there is a store within ten miles that accepts trade-ins. As HD Goofnut said, a standard Blu-ray that's in print doesn't hold much resale value, so it doesn't seem worth the effort to sell them online.

I have bought quite a few blind buys, some great and some far from great,I have been looking at them this week thinking I could probably get rid of around twenty or so and that's what I plan to do so to answer your question...no.
