New poll time! If we decided to make English dubs for some classic anime TV series would you be willing to pay more to have a dub?

For example, the retail price of an English subtitled only 26 episode Blu Ray set could be $59.95. If we were to dub the same series there would be 2 sets at $59.95 retail each. This would be done to recoup the high costs of English dubbing. Set 1 would have 13 episodes, and set 2 would have the other 13 episodes.

Yeah I saw this. Sounds like bullshit and would screw over sub only watchers. Basically asking for twice as much for something I have no interest in. Really hope it doesn't happen but it probably will. Luckily they don't license that much I want.

I'm fine with it, as long as the dubs are good. I usually prefer to watch dubs myself. Yes seems to be the winning option currently.

Nope.

My main reason isn’t because I’m a sub purist (I am), but because of price. If the MSRP was raised to, say, $89.95 it would be fine by me (still would like it cheaper, but hey, I can live with that). Plus, with a dub, it would take up more space, so lower bitrates (depends on how many discs are used- it may be more or less, who knows?). I prefer everything in one set if possible.

If the dub already exists, by all means, include it, but if it doesn’t- I wouldn’t bother.

I don't really see the problem. This is exactly the same as we pay from other companies and Discotek titles are heavily discounted during studio sales. I know a lot of people here hate dubs but I think more people enjoying classic titles is a good thing. Getting into dubs is also a good opportunity for Discotek to grow and they are probably my favorite US company out there.

I would still prefer a single set at a higher price than a split release though similar to Sentai for 24 episode series. I think they would also be considerate on which titles to dub and having more Lupin and/or other true classics get dubbed would be awesome.

Difference is those companies were doing it from the start. They are basically asking us to pay twice as much. How is that OK? This has nothing to do with hating dubs. How bout asking a dub watcher to pay twice as much to include the original Japanese audio. It's crap either way.

It'd be nice if you had the option to pay less and not have to buy a dub you have no interest in. That said, if dubbing genuinely keeps folks interested in anime then I can't complain.

$60 for a half-season release is par for the course with FUNimation releases, so I personally have no issues with this option to include dual-audio.

I can see Sound Cadence being the de-facto ADR studio to handle the vintage shows.

I personally only watch in original language with subs.
It would be good extra to have dubbed, but not if it’s going to cost extra.

With the amount of movies I buy, the price is one of top reason influencing my decision to buy it or not. (Quality of anime, and having original language is other top)

Sorry for dubbed viewers, but if it’s choice between price and having non-original English dubbed, it’s not even a contest for me. Doesn’t take even split second. Price all the way.

There are several anime/movies that I haven’t bought because of price (reason I never import from Japan, no matter how much I love the series)
But if it’s cheap enough, I’ll blind buy lot of series, and even ones I consider mediocre.

Not having original language will definitely not make me buy it (samurai pizza cats, speed racer, Pokémon )

So if you can bring series with original language with cheaper price. You’ll have my money even with blind buys.
But if you are going to dub it and charge extra, it better be one of my favorite series of all time, otherwise I’m most likely will not be buying it (until there is some serious discounts.)

Dubbed language is non-issue for my purchase (Cool extra to have - I would rather have than not, but doesn’t effect my purchase decision) unless that increases the price.(which is one of my main reason)

It depends on the dub, if it's competent like Bang Zoom or Funimation, definitely. But, if it's one of those cheap SE Asian dubs, probably not..

Absolutely. I'm just a simple, low-brow guy who likes to watch movies and TV shows, not read them. This is especially true for animation, which I cannot enjoy watching with subs. And I have a feeling a lot of folks out there who casually enjoy and purchase anime, as opposed to hardcore enthusiasts, feel the same way.

I said yes, because 90% of English dubs today are on-par with the Japanese version, and it also makes the series more accessible in English speaking countries, whether you want to admit it or not

If you're not used to reading subtitles, that's okay! Just keep trying, and you'll get there eventually!

The only instance I can understand people only (enthesis on only) going for dubs are those who have a cognitive issue with reading. In that case, it's perfectly fine and makes total sense. I don't want to sound offensive, but by watching dub only, viewers are missing out on how the work was intended to be seen by the director. Even if the acting was 100% equally good, it still wouldn't be the exact same.

The percentage of dubs on-par with Japanese is less than 10% if we count everything ever made, and with how things are now (using the same voice actors all over in everything) it's less than 5%.

I don't just limit it to anime, it's film/television in general. I think we are doing the creators a disservice if we don't watch with the original language and subtitles. It might not be the most fun for some people, but it's more accurate.

I voted no. Older anime's sound weird with new dubs (look at Vampire Hunter D's new dub), and I don't really want to pay near double the cost just to have a new voice track for the older stuff I'm interested in.

And it's not that I'm anti-dub. If there's an older dub track that's campy and a good example of the time, cool put that on the disc.
