Charlie Brown/Peanuts is "Too Mean", Encourages Bullying

At first I thought this story was a joke, but no, it's sadly real. Some people need to get a life. If Peanuts doesn't pass the "PC test" what does anymore?

As Halloween nears, many families will gather around the old television set for the annual viewing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” But, one dad says it’s time to retire the classic cartoon because of its taunting messages and unkind words.

“The show is riddled with the kids calling each other stupid, dumb, and blockheads. There is continous teasing and bullying. Charlie Brown is supposed to be the hero, instead he is kicked and demeaned at every turn, even by the adults giving out candy,” Buzz Bishop, otherwise known as DadCamp, wrote at Babble.com recently.

Bishop argues that apart from a sense of nostalgia for parents, the Charlie Brown specials have nothing of value to offer today’s kids. He finds the shows’ acceptance of schoolyard teasing to be antiquated. And, as the father of young kids, he finds the constant use of words like “stupid” “dumb” and “blockhead” to be a bad message for those little ears. “Charlie Brown is always an outsider, the cool kids continue to play tricks, and nobody is ever held to account. In an era of hashtags like #RIPAmandaTodd, these types of attitudes are no longer appropriate,” Bishop wrote.

As the gang goes trick-or-treating, Charlie Brown is repeatedly given a rock while the other children are given treats. Bishop points to this as evidence that even the adults are in on the bullying. Of course, since Charlie Brown is wearing a costume, it could be argued that the adults aren’t intentionally singling the poor kid out.

Throughout life, most of us have times when we feel like everyone else is getting treats (or bags full of candy, if you will), while we get nothing but a sack of rocks. Maybe it’s helpful and reassuring for kids to know that everyone else has those “sucks to be me” moments once in a while. Admittedly, old Charlie Brown seems to have more than his fair share.

I don't even like Peanuts, but this is absolutely ridiculous. I can't believe that there are real adults who really think this way. What's worse, he has children!

everyone has been teased @ some point....and it wasn't b/c of Charlie Brown.

if Charlie Brown is bad....how does this guy feel about Looney Tunes??

as a parent, he s/b teaching his kids what they should be doing if they are teased to make it stop....he shouldn't be looking for something to pin the problem on.

Unfortunately, bullying is the new target of people. It's sad that certain kids have taken their lives and it's not fun but people instead of focusing on where the problems are, at home, in schools where the parents and teachersjust don't give a crap what their kids do until something bad happen, they point the finger at something else It's how our society work's now, why should I make an effort and blame myself and try harder when I can put all the blame on something else.

When I was in school and screwed up and the teacher called my parents over, they never took my side, they were working with the teacher. Now a days it's "how dare you disturb me with this and blame my wonderful golden child, so what he's dealing drugs in school? He as a business!"

I bet this dad is one of those parents who wants all kids to get the same participation trophy for little league sports. Can't have some kids getting a bigger trophy or feeling might get hurt.

if you don't think that certain shows/cartoons/movies are inappropriate for your kids, then don't let them watch them.

but don't even DARE to tell me what my kids can and can't watch (not that i have kids). it ain't nobody's business but the parents what kids watch. if the parents allow their kids to watch things that other parents would consider inappropriate, so be it.
if you have to go on and on about how a classic cartoon that has been around for a long time sends the wrong messages to kids, then you aren't raising your kids right.
my youngest niece watches things like that and knows that it's not real and it's in indicative of real life.

and while she's 11 now, she's known this for a few years.

i can't stand people like that.

"let's give them all trophies so they don't feel bad about losing." or "let's not keep score so there are no losers."

yeah, good job there. what are you gonna do when they have to face real life and realize that there ARE winners and losers.

when i played little league baseball those many years ago, i never cried if i didn't get a trophy just like the winners did. i knew that if we lost, we had to work harder to get a trophy the next time.

So it is better to teach your kids if they flash on the internet multiple times, do drugs, drink underage, sleep with a guy while underage who has a girlfriend, get busted for it by said girlfriend and then kill themselves they are a poor little innocent victim that wasn't to blame. In effect teaching your kids that they should do that kind of stuff instead of teaching them that it is wrong.

But Lucy pulling a football away from her friend as a joke will totally corrupt them about what is right and wrong. Sounds about right
