Default Ridley Scott's FOREVER WAR Going 3D - This Movie Sounds Awesome!!

Ridley Scott announced that "I’m filming a book by Joe Haldeman called Forever War. I’ve got a good writer doing it. I’ve seen some of James Cameron’s work [with Avatar], and I’ve got to go 3D. It’s going to be phenomenal."

Here is some background on the novel/plot for those that don't know the premise:
Quote:
The Forever War is a 1974 science fiction novel by Joe Haldeman. It won the Nebula Award and Locus Award in 1975 and the Hugo Award in 1976. Both an action-laden and contemplative story of an interstellar war between humanity and the enigmatic Tauran species, it deals with themes like the inhumanity of both war and its attendant bureaucracy, as well as with the results of time dilation space travel which may cause a soldier to return to his home only after centuries have gone by.
I have to admit this sounds like a really awesome movie and a welcome return for Ridley to the sci-fi genre.

Sounds interesting. I have enjoyed a lot of Scott's movies. Hopefully this one won't disappoint.

i know this looks incredible so far, especially since people have been comparing it to blade runner or alien in terms of quality.

I think this movie has already been made and it's called Terminator.

Then you've obviously never read it

It's closest to the book of Starship Troopers, mixed with Ender's Game (not the kids part, the relativity and philosophy)

It's about how this war lasts for a thousand years because of relativity, but for the protagonist it only lasts a few years, against a race that was never a threat in the first place

now if only James Cameron would do another gritty sci fi action movie.

maybe a new starship troopers that was more like the Heinlein book. I want to see jumpsuits!

I've seen the cgi series "Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles" and it was pretty good but we need an R rated live action one with a big budget

Awesome, I'm all for more sci-fi. Doubt it'll be anywhere near Blade Runner, but still.

Ridley Scott's THE FOREVER WAR Back To The Front Lines!

Yes! Ridley Scott is apparently still pushing forward with his adaptation of Joe Haldeman's THE FOREVER WAR and has inked Dante (D.W.) Harper (ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS) to adapt it for him.

No word on whether Harper was the original person that Scott hired to adapt the book or not. We knew someone was working on just that way back in 2009 (obviously before his 3D PROMETHEUS) when he said:

"I'm filming a book by Joe Haldeman called Forever War. I've got a good writer doing it. I've seen some of James Cameron's work, and I've got to go 3D. It's going to be phenomenal."

Here's the book's description from Amazon:
The Earth's leaders have drawn a line in the interstellar sand--despite the fact that the fierce alien enemy they would oppose is inscrutable, unconquerable, and very far away. A reluctant conscript drafted into an elite Military unit, Private William Mandella has been propelled through space and time to fight in the distant thousand-year conflict; to perform his duties and do whatever it takes to survive the ordeal and return home. But "home" may be even more terrifying than battle, because, thanks to the time dilation caused by space travel, Mandella is aging months while the Earth he left behind is aging centuries...

I'm just glad that this project hasn't gotten back-burnered with all of Scott's other projects on the go, like THE COUNSELOR, PROMETHEUS 2 and BLADE RUNNER 2. I have to underscore that the potential of this project is immense and easily could fall in line with Scott's other sci-fi classics.

I'm not kidding. This could be his finest hour in science fiction; the story is that good. More when we get it! Thanks for the heads up Adam...

Strange that he's decided to take on another project when he's so busy planning sequels to Prometheus and Blade Runner.

More strange that he's planning on doing this in 3D - the last interview I heard with him, back just as Prometheus was released, was with Mark Kermode. Kermode, as unenthusiastic as they come about 3D, asked Scott whether he was planning on doing more of his films in the format and the director answered "erm...n-well, yes, I suppose". If you manage to listen to the interview, you'll see what I mean - he's about to say no and, as he suddenly remembers that Fox probably had a stipulation in the contract for Prometheus that it and its subsequent sequels had to be done in 3D, says yes and finishes his answer. Kermode didn't drop that for the rest of the podcast.

Sounds exciting, though. I hope that, with this happening, the Blade Runner sequel has enough preparation and actually goes ahead -- I've been waiting for it for so long.

Yes this sounds like it could be an excellent film given the talent involved and the interesting premise, but I can't match the hyperbolic enthusiasm of that MarketSaw piece.

Sorry, have you maybe misinterpreted what you heard? Scott had nothing but praise for 3D and the whole process of shooting with the format.

Also, who listens to Kermode anymore? Not only has he got it totally wrong with 3D,but he's kissing the BBFC's behind, saying what a great institution they are and how far they've come.... not a fan of the guy.

Yea, unfortunately that's his style. You just have to tune that part out when reading his posts.

I love The Forever War. It seems like ages ago I heard Ridley Scott bought the rights. I'm glad to hear some more news on it!

I'm not sure if I can get excited about this, there are a lot of things on his plate right now so what are the chances we will ever see this?

Ridley is getting a bit Del Toro-ish as of late.

No, I didn't misinterpret what Ridley Scott said - it's right there on the interview. For someone who has nothing for praise about the format, you'd think he wouldn't even need to hesitate to confirm he'd be doing every future project in it, let alone start to say no, like he does.

I happen to think that Kermode is one of the best film critics around right now - he is honest and doesn't let his own subjective view take over his opinion of the whole film, like so many other critics do. Just because you love 3D really doesn't mean that anyone who is against is necessarily wrong, especially with a critic such as Kermode who has such well thought-out responses as to why he doesn't like it.

How hasn't the BBFC done a lot for British film? It's been the spearhead in allowing funding for upcoming directors, archiving and logging some of the oldest films in existence and releasing great remasters of important landmarks in cinema.

I've bought it at least five times over the past twenty or so years and it just sat in the 'unread' stack until disappearing to whereever my unread paperbacks go.

In fact, I think I might have one laying around now...
