So I realize Dolby Digital Plus probably died off with HD DVD but it is a standard on Blu-Ray why isn't it used AT ALL? I'm sort of a tech nerd when it comes to the stuff behind all the glory so I like discussion
![]() I think Dolby Digital Plus is still a viable codec along side a legacy track for example: -Netflix: So far the closest thing to discrete lossy 7.1 is DTS-ES which is only 6.1...haven't seen DTS-ES Discrete on much titles at all. I thought Netflix was using DD+ low bit rate for a short time but I guess not? -Xbox360 games: The DVD's they store the games on do not hold enough space for lossless audio or even lossy DTS-HD HR audio...Obviously the PS3 can with 25-50GB discs as I've seen a title with 7.1 DTS-HD...with Dolby Digital Plus game developers can deliver true discrete 7.1 audio on standard DVD capacity discs at bit rates as low as 768kbps... -High end websharing websites like Vimeo: I'm a short film ameutur but I believe audio is half the film, actually for me its about 60% now...2ch audio is the standard for internet broadcast but honestly it shouldn't be the only one...with Dolby Digital Plus you could deliver high quality lossy discrete 7.1... I guess I'm curious because as both a tech nerd who appreciates the codecs behind the technology and of course the entertainment I can honestly say Dolby Pro Logic IIx (or any matrixing really) does not compare to discrete 6.1/7.1. AC-3 is old as sin and DTS-MA is great but a space gobbler for a DVD or other smaller media devices.. |
