The ATSC 3.0 specs will most likely support both 8K and 4K quality video with the more efficient H.265 codec and 1024QAM once the ATSC 3.0 standard is finalized. 4K broadcasts will come first then later on 8K broadcasts (3-D is also supported with ATSC 3.0). It might take 10 to 20 years before ATSC 3.0 is used to increase virtual bandwidth for standard HD channels and then later on 4K and 8K channels.

this is after all the only true way we can replace 65mm and 70mm film for the digital world and for the first time view that same content at home!
Life is good! Now all I need is an affordable 4k projector! |

Is there a chance 1:44 televisions will eventually return to homes with such high resolutions (not to mention IMAX footage)? |

I don't see why not, soon enough relatively speaking we will be able to pick any resolution aspect ratio screen we would like. Similar to going to a a painting frame shop.
