you would think that having an entire aisle dedictated to HDM in most stores and a min. of 3 endcaps in most stores they would have some idea what this stuff is.

im gonna keep my security job as im working it now (only weekends) and i'll work bestbuy the days i dont have school.
i was at bestbuy yesterday and i asked someone about the blu ray sale and he asked me right back what blu ray was. this guy worked in the movie section. i almost had a heart attack

its just ridiculous that people who work there are clueless and me the consumer has to inform them

this is what we should be doing though
instead of just supporting blu ray by buying titles as they come out and convincing our friends and family we should be in the stores pushing sales of and informing the general public about this next gen media

Good for you. I would agree that they could use the help. I have to say though that Best Buy is better than Circuit City!

It is possible that you did ask a newbie at the store. It is the Seasonal hiring period. They typically hire clerks who won't screw up too much. I work part time at BBY, I know my stuff.

when he asked me what blu ray was i asked him if this was his first day and he told me he'd been there since the beginning of the summer. which gives him more than ample time to walk in through the front doors where the first thing you notice is a huge rack full of blu rays

I had to tell my Best Buy about the BOGO they had a couple weeks ago! They didn't know anything about it and I actually made them let me use one of their computers to prove it. They said "Thanks, that's a great deal we have." Well NO SH*T!

this is interesting....has there ever been a thread about what people do for a living here? no disrespect to anyone, but it is hard to fathom that alot of people here can afford such high dollar things on a cashiers or stockers pay.

They'll probably put you in appliances or something.

I don't think you realize how little incentive there is for Best Buy employees to do anything but the bare minimum. They pay horribly (especially media), their benefits are expensive, and even if you are full-time and you get tuition reimbursement, there's no guarantee you'll get it. My fiance has been arguing with them back and forth for a year to get the money they owe her. The discount on some stuff is pretty good, but most of the stuff you'd want to buy they don't pay you enough to afford. Employees get yearly raises, often no more than 25 cents, and they have only one bonus in place, which involves the NOP, and that's based off of the entire district rather than your store. This is often never seen though, as almost every manager I've worked with caves in to every customer demand and the NOP goal is blown.

I'm not saying people shouldn't take pride in their work, but Best Buy offers no incentive for people to do better. They actually expect you to study their "business acumen" outside of work so that they can quiz you on what NOP, NOPAT, their "Seven Levers of SOP," are, even though it doesn't pertain to anyone's job who is below management. Many people working there simply drive around and put in applications wherever, and if its Best Buy that calls them back, so be it. They barely match people's positions with their strengths, but just throw people into whatever department has an opening.

If you get the job, good luck, but you'll probably get in trouble more than anything for spending too much time in the Blu-ray aisle. They'd rather have you shuffling back and forth into one of their other understaffed departments.

same here. im 19 years old, student, parents pay for tuition and board. ive got 2 jobs (i call alumni and ask for $ and work at scottrade over breaks). i bought a 599 ps3 spring 07 and a $1750 40" tv last summer, i don't have money for any more blu-rays for a while, but when i get my tv paid off ill be buying a lot as i have really fallen behind. my dad picked up The Shining yesterday for me, he said its a xmas present though.

Yeah, Best Buy may as well be called "Best FUD"

I recall a couple of months ago asking if "The Fifth Element" was the remastered version or not. Although I explained to the sales guy "who would know" that it was in fact remastered he continued to say the same thing to me. Para-quote "It's an old movie and they are just putting the DVD format on blu-ray because it is old. Only newer movies are in high def." Wot da heck?!

He obviously refused to listen to fact. I politely thanked him for his time and put back the two or three titles I was holding in my hand. I left there with NOTHING. Idiot cost them a $100+ sale.

Of chain type brick and mortar stores, I've found Ultimate Electronics to be generally the most informed. They don't sell many movies though, although I think that's going to change.
