Default Current BD and HD-DVD speed

I know BD is currently on 2x speed.

But how is this with Hd-DVD? Are they at 1x speed or 2x speed?

2x i'm pretty sure though its only avaliable in toshiba laptops.

Why would a set top player go faster than 1x?

That said, the drives in the Toshiba are the NEC IDE drives so they are probably capable of faster...
