Default Attack of the Show contest is now Blu

last week AOTS was promoting a contest where the prize was a Tosh HD DVD player and a copy of the sd dvd of spiderman 3(so you can upconvert it). on yesterdays episode, olivia munn said they got a lot of complaints that "the prize didn't make any sense". so the prize was "upgraded" to a blu-ray copy of spiderman 3 and a sony blu-ray player.

i know the original contest prize was already discussed here, but i'm not sure if the new prize was discussed. let me know if this is a redundant thread.

Interesting, it would have made more sense to give an HD DVD with the player, but maybe the complaints were about the player and not the combination. Odd that they would switch the entire prize unless it had to have something to do with Spider-man.

I don't know what the hell that show is but it's hilarious to hear about. A DVD movie for an HD player so they can upscale it? LOL! BTW, their new prize infers Blu-Ray players can only play Blu-Ray movies.

i agree, the contest had nothing to do with spiderman, so it would have made more sense to switch it to a hd dvd of transformers. but i'm happier they changed it to blu

Giving away an SD DVD copy of Spiderman 3 with an HD DVD player so you can watch it "upconverted" is just plain dumb. Probably Kevin Pierra's idea.

kevin was "on assignment" so he wasn't on the episode. they probably waited until he was gone to switch the prize on him.......very sneaky

It would be cool if it was audience reaction that changed the prize. But I think it was probably Sony who weren't happy that Spiderman 3 was being used to help promote HD-DVD - and rightfully so.

Did they say on the show that it was "upgraded" to a Blu-Ray player and Blu-Ray SM3?

If they did, this was nice slap in the face for HD DVD, because as a viewer I'd feel that Blu-Ray is presented as an upgrade vs HD DVD

That is probably more true than anything.

Ha Ha yea I saw this last night and both my room mate and I had to rewind the TIVO and be sure what we herd was what we thought we herd. It definitely sounded as if they were saying Blu-ray was better than HD-DUD and thus a more note worthy prize to win. Really makes me wonder what in the world happen to make that change. Kind of out of place for G4.

This isn't too hard too figure out. Like Toshiba/Microsoft buying off Payolamount, Sony started flashing some cash to push Spiderman 3. Television shows will take whoever is the highest bidder for product placement. There are numerous stories from the early days of television that on air personalities would push things on their shows to their audiences that they hated off the air. I personally like it, because it means G4 can't badmouth blu-ray any more.
