United Kingdom Great Expectations (Mike Newell)

Great Expectations Blu-ray REVIEW

This is indeed a wonderful adaptation of the classic novel. In fact, it feels far more cohesive than Alfonso Cuarón's updated version.

Top cast and superb production values

If you have been on the fence because of mixed reviews, ignore them and see this film. It is very, very well done.

Pro-B, what did you think of Helena Bonham-Carter's portrayal of Miss Havisham? From the trailer it looks rather maniacal.

I think she is very good (or appropriately kooky).

As I mentioned in the review, the footage from inside the house is done really well -- minimal light, shadows, quite eerie. For me this is believable Gothic atmosphere. You don't have to go over the top to make the film look grotesquely spooky (I think a lot of people confuse Gothic with grotesquely spooky/scary).

My opinion is that this film has been undeservedly dismissed by a lot of people. It is a very, very good adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel. If you've read the novel -- and you aren't familiar just with Lean/Cuaron's films -- you know that the people who did the film knew exactly what they were doing.

I love the book and have the Lean and BBC adaptations. I don't know whether to buy this because Miss Havisham is my favourite character and I think of her as shut down and seething with anger rather than expressive. However, I'm definitely going to rent it after your review!

I hope you enjoy it, James.

I think that the cast is terrific. For me this is what new adaptations/remakes should look and feel like - fresh with terrific emphasis on detail and brilliantly acted. Even the supporting actors are outstanding. Just watch Robbie Coltrane

Have a great Sunday, James

Are there any plans for a Region-A release of this movie? Great Expectations is one of my favorite novels, but I only have a Region-A player.

I have not seen any info about an upcoming U.S. release, Matty.
