Was wondering if you have ever seen 'Holiday Inn' in HD? If you have you have probably noticed the limitations inherent in black and white film stock from the 40s. Although for it's time it was state of the art, the technology was still quite young and Kodak produced a very grainy film. With the projectors of the day it wasn't noticeable on the big screen, but today with HD, it is somewhat distracting. I imagine it would be virtually unwatchable on Blu-Ray.
This is why (i'm assuming) it has not been - nor will be - released on Blu-Ray until such time that the graininess of the film can be smoothed out and the picture will look more realistic. 'White Christmas' was produced in the 50s and film technology had grown by leaps and bounds, thus a Blu-Ray release would make more sense. Although as our video technology expands, the limitations of all films become more apparent. I think, for now the best way to watch 'Holiday Inn' - or any older film for that matter - is standard definition video. |

I don't doubt your wisdom regards converting films made in the 1940's to blu ray. However, can you explain why Casablanca, made in 1942, two years before Holiday Inn, looks - in terms of video clarity - as if it could have been made last year? Why can't a similar restore be done on Holiday Inn? |
