I really respect Media Molecule for what they've done in regards to the user creation genre, but Im a little tired of them restricting our creativity to fit into their themes.
Everything in Little Big Planet was geared and designed towards making your levels cartoony like the ones they made. And in Dreams why does my creation have to be dream like? Why not just give us a blank sandbox and let us go wild? Why force us into some sort of 'theme'? I know technically the game wont 'force' you to do anything, but all its tools will no doubt be built around making your level feel as 'dreamlike' as possible, which is a shame. |

I love the idea of creating your own game, but the sackboy style of Little Big Planet kept me away, even with all of the praise the game got.
The trailer for the new game is interesting, but not sure what the motive is of the game yet. Will have to see more. |

Based on the information we have so far and the footage I've seen...I have ZERO interest in this game whatsoever. I liked Little Big Planet because underneath all the creativity, it was a very solid platformer and I enjoyed playing that and trying out all the user created levels. However I just don't know what the hell to make of this "game."

Watching the trailer again since e3, hopefully it's a game creation tool, and these are just samples of the kinds of games you can create with your imagination. If that's the case, that would be more interesting. The trailer doesn't make it obvious how it all connects, beyond imagining how dreams tend to flow and blend into each other.

There's been quite a bit more info on this game recently... Beta is supposed to be coming soon (sometime before the end of the year, at least), and they've been doing regular livestreams of the gameplay on their Youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/user/MediaMolecule/videos
You can see in those videos exactly how the character and environment creation works. I imagine they'll show off other parts of the game once they're ready (they've promised a music creation system too, for example). I'm excited for the possibilities of this game, but also curious about the logic system for creating your own games. I'd like to see a demonstration of that. |

I honestly think this game is heading to PSVR but we'll have to wait and see. |

GM, I truly hope I'm wrong but we've known about this "game" for what, 2 years now and I still don't know what the hell it is. IS it actually a game? Because from what I can tell this is nothing but creation software and that's fine. But it still needs to be a game and I'm just not seeing it and frankly, I don't understand who this is for. Unless MM shows me something that I haven't seen yet, I think this game is doomed to the budget bin much like Project Spark.

It's not described as a game, but as an "experience", which is pretty much what every "game" announced for VR has also been described as. It's where you go to experience the dreams of MM and create your own. Does not sound like "my cup of tea" so I will follow their advice and stay away.

Going by what we currently know about Dreams, which I'll admit at this point is very little, I'm frankly surprised that Sony green lit this project. Even as "arty" as Sony allows their developers to be, I'd have a very hard time coming up with an answer to justify the existence of this. WHO exactly is this for? If you're Sony you want to financially support projects that have a chance to reach a wide audience and I'm just not seeing it with Dreams. |

I've watched some of the videos I linked to, and they answered questions during the gameplay demonstrations so I learned a bit more about it...
People have directly asked them if Dreams will be available for VR and they said it isn't really a priority, they're focusing on the core game right now, but they're open to possibly developing a VR version in the future. As for the game itself, my understanding is that you can play it without creating anything because there will be user-created "dreams" to play, and possibly also some kind of story mode (I'm a little unclear on that still, but they mentioned something about it in passing). Obviously you get more out of it if you use the creative tools, but I don't think you have to if you don't want to. But it isn't without a specific audience, it's for people who enjoy creating things, and that audience is not as small as you might think. If it turns out to be nothing more than creation software, there's nothing wrong with that - it doesn't have to be a game by itself because there is potential for many games within it as long as people are putting in the work to make them. |
