Default Fresh actors - better movie experience?

If you see a movie with solid or great unknown actors instead of mainstream actors, does that enhance the movie experience for you? It can for me, it's exciting to get to know and learn about "new" actors. That was probably part of the reason I avoided Tom Hanks' movies for awhile, he really over-did it in the 90s and for part of the past decade.

Not really, I find the I can usually look past actors in films and see the character they're playing.

I wouldn't necessarily say that I enjoy a movie more because I didn't know the actors, nor would I enjoy a movie less because a character was similar to one that the actor played prevously. However, I would say that an actor who is able to break typecasting and play a role well(i.e. Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting) can enhance a film.

I do like watching films with good performances from up-and-coming actors, kind of like a glimpse into the future. However, the way Hollywood seems to cast actors these days, overexposure happens pretty quickly(I'm talking about you Sam Worthington).

Depends on the movie. Depends on the actors.

For example: Blair With Project wouldn't have worked with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. But Mr. and Mrs. Smith wouldn't have worked WITHOUT Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

I agree, and to a certain extent, feel the same. This is why i really enjoy watching Asian and European films as well, considering i am nowhere near as familiar with those actors, as i am with our "Mainstream Hollywood" actors. There have been times when i was watching a movie on Blu or in the theater, i thought to myself how much better it could have been without any familiar faces and characteristics attached to those familiar faces.

I enjoy new actors or rarely used actors (perhaps ones I rarely see even if in a lot of material.. Sam Rockwell for example I've rarely watched, Ben Foster) as long as they are good.

Some actors I just cringe at now when I see there name aas it turn me off to movies with them (Samuel L. Jackson, Nicholas Cage both of these guys are so 1 dimensional and boring). Yeah, Tom Hanks after The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons I have little desire to see him ever again..

Others I look forward to even though I've seen them tons of times (John Travolta (always hoping for cheesy over the top like Taking of Pelham or The Punisher, hahaha). Hugh Jackman, always puts on a great performance.

I don't know if I like fresh actors specifically, I think it's that I get tired of seeing the same people over and over again. Like DiCaprio.

For myself, having relative unknowns in a movie (if they are good) helps me concentrate more on the story.

I was making the point that Mr. And Mrs. Smith wouldn't have worked without "hot" Hollywood stars, not that it would only work with Bradgelina.

Nowadays, it seems like many (most?) actors have become type-cast. They play the same type of characters over and over again. Fresh actors bring an empty slate to the screen. With new actors, the actor's "history" doesn't influence the viewer.

On the other hand, "fresh actors", don't sell a lot of movie tickets. How many people would have seen "Jennifer's Body" if it starred Plain Jane Nobody. I suspect that so few people would have seen it that no-one on this board would complain about how bad it was (very few would have seen it).

That's funny, because I didn't see it specifically because she was in it. She is just the worst.

It all depends. If better known actors are just put in for name recognition which equals box office moola then putting in lesser known actors can make the film better. I will give you an example, and don't bite my head off for lovers of this movie: Grease. Now I enjoy it and even have the blu, but I feel if they had put in lesser known talented actors that were actually the right age the film would have been better, but probably not as financially successful.

I actually agree with you on this. I see beyond the actor/actress, although sometimes I do have a difficulty depending on the performance.
