Default Untitled Universal Monsters Film (4/21/17)

Quote:
With The Mummy already set to hit on June 24, 2016, Universal Pictures has set a mystery Universal Monsters film for release on Friday, April 21, 2017. It's the first film to claim that date.

There's no word yet on what the focus of the mystery film will be, but it will follow The Mummy, which boasts a screenplay by Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts and is set to be directed by Alex Kurtzman. Kurtzman also serves as a producer alongside Roberto Orci, Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel. Bobby Cohen will executive produce.

A Van Helsing feature is also said to be in the works, although there's no word on whether or not that might be the project to claim this new date.

Creature From The Black Lagoon would be interesting if done right, keeping the blood and gore down and casting it right and not with whoever is the flavor of the month. My biggest worry is Kurtzman and Orci .

Clint Eastwood could reprise his role as the lab technician.

1. The Mummy sequels
2. The Wolfman
3. Frankenstein
4. Frankenstein vs the Wolfman
5. Dracula
6. Creature from the Black Lagoon
7. The Invisible Man
8. Phantom of the Opera
9. all the rest of the above in their many sequels (a great undertaking) in the same classic Universal Monsters atmosphere(nothing else will do)!

In the next Wolfman, they really need to reveal if he's got nards.

None of these Universal Monster reboots have been good at all.

Wolfman had so much potential with the cast and Rick Baker. Then CGI happened.

As much as I'd love a new werewolf film, The Wolfman remake sucked. I know they are like flavour of the month and it may be to their detriment, but seeing some high concept crossovers is really the part that has me excited the most for this. I'd love to see a Frankenstein vs The Wolfman remake in the vein of Freddy vs. Jason - but chucking in The Mummy with the power set from the trilogy wouldn't hurt too bad either.

Not to be a naysayer, but my expectation would be some PG-13 suck-fest aimed at a teenage / college age audience, instead of an adult, modern-day horror film that captures the spirit of the original Universal Horror films.

I'm unsure about this whole Universal monsters revival project. I love the original films, but all more recent attempts at remaking and reimagining them have fallen flat.

They're not going to make a film that captures the spirit of the originals because those originals, as great as a few of them were, are considered quite dull and not scary to modern audiences. And I say that even though "The Bride of Frankenstein" is probably my favorite horror film of all time. You really couldn't maintain the atmosphere unless you made them in black & white. Even Mel Brooks understood that.

Boris Karloff refused to play the Frankenstein monster after "Son Of...." because even he felt it was getting quite silly.

I've written this before, but IMO, instead of that trashy Dracula film they just released, they should make a movie of the Dacre Stoker/Ian Holt sequel, "Dracula, the Undead". Here's the Publisher's Weekly summary:

Quote:
In this sequel to Bram Stoker's Dracula, his great-grandnephew offers one of the rowdiest revisionist treatments of the most influential vampire novel ever written. In 1912, as Stoker labors to adapt Dracula for the stage, its characters are dying gruesomely all over London. It turns out they are as real as Stoker himself, who learned their secret story on the sly and took creative liberties when turning it into his popular penny dreadful. Dracula's true story involves the passing of his blood line through Mina Harker to her son; a malignant Dr. Van Helsing, who Scotland Yard suspects had a hand in the murders attributed to Jack the Ripper; and the exploits of a 16th-century vampire countess, Dracula's former lover, who cuts a bloody swath through London seeking the survivors of Dracula's last stand in Transylvania. Energetically paced and packed with outrageously entertaining action, this supernatural thriller is a well-needed shot of fresh blood for the Dracula mythos.

And for that exact reason I hope they fail miserably at this. Rather than tarnish the images of the original monsters they should come up with something new. Instead they'll go for something bourne out of greed ... and the lack of creativity, talent and "vision".

There are no Freunds, Langs, Brownings or Whales today, no Karloffs or Lugosis or Chaneys, and ESPECIALLY no influences as heavy as the expressionism coming out of 20's Germany, and later the U.S.

So they should just leave it alone because they can never come close to the impact and importance of the originals, let alone the work and talents of those involved.

Some things should remain sacred, and when it comes to cinema, I see the Universal Monsters, Hitchcock's work, etc., in that [vein].

They have been trying to remake that movie on and off again since 1982. Wonder if they will actually do it this time.

I for one hope they do.

Universal Pictures has been developing a modern day take on The Creature From the Black Lagoon for decades. And while we’ve seen multiple Mummy movies, The Wolfman and various incarnations of Dracula and Van Helsing, the Creature has yet to make it back to theaters.

With the Universal Monsters shared universe in motion, starting with the god-awful Dracula Untold, Universal is developing out new features for all of their monsters. While they attempt to keep everything under their hat, we do know that Uni is planning to resurrect The Mummy on June 24, 2015, and then will tell of The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, Frankenstein, and even The Bride of Frankenstein.

Creature From the Black Lagoon hasn’t been mentioned, until now.

This tracking board is claiming that Uni has their eyes on Scarlett Johansson for the remake.

A remake technically been on the slate since 1982, add the site, with original director Jack Arnold in talks to return. The project was ultimately scrapped, with John Carpenter, Gary Ross and Breck Eisner and Guillermo Del Toro each developing separate versions of the project over the next two decades.

The last we heard was that Dave Kajganich, who wrote the Daniel Craig-Nicole Kidman thriller The Invasion several years ago, was penning the screenplay. Bruce Eisner was once attached to direct the redo of the 1954 film that centered on a prehistoric water-breathing humanoid monster that lived in a remote Amazonian river and a group of scientists that want to study him.

The current remake is taking shape at Universal, with Larger Than Life and Strike Entertainment producing. Gary Ross, Robin Bissell, Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, with a screenplay by Jeff Blitz, Gary Ross, Tedi Sarafian and Paul Schering. Leslie Urdang, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Jay Polidoro will oversee development for the studio.
