Default First 11.1 channel audio Blu-ray release

‘The Expendables 2’ will be the First Blu-ray with 11.1 Channel DTS Neo:X

Home Theater News Blu-ray Software News

Written by Dick Ward

Friday, 12 October 2012

If you’re a fan of those gloriously overacted action films of the 80s and 90s then you don’t need a new reason to be excited about the November 20th Blu-ray release of ‘The Expendables 2.’ Of course, even the most Stallone/Schwarzenegger/Statham hating home theater enthusiast will find something exciting to check out in this release – it’s the first Blu-ray to include DTS Neo:X.

Neo:X is a codec that gives you, in addition to the normal 7.1 setup, four channels for height and a bit of extra width. The result is a more all encompassing 3D sound that gives some extra life to the audio. If you’re not an action fan, ‘Step Up Revolution’ is due out the week after, also featuring DTS Neo:X.

3D sound...ha.

I wonder if very many people have a setup that could take advantage of this.

I'm glad Expendables 2 is doing this. Now you can not only see that it sucks, but you can actually hear that it sucks...amazing!

How may channels of sound is the real world?? I hope I see the day where we have enough audio channels to be happy. At this point this just seems to be another way to make money off of people.

I usually find loud action movies to be poor showcases of multi-channel audio. When you're surrounded by explosions, gunshots, and people yelling profanity at each other, it's simply a cacophony of noise.

On the other hand, audio demos that slowly pan across the channels, classical music releases, or movies with quiet ambient effects (such as nature documentaries) are able to "trick" me into looking around to see which channel is carrying which particular sound.

I see no point as to why The Expendables 2 is receiving 7.1 and 11.1 tracks when it was recorded and released in 5.1. Stupid. How many people out there actually have 11.1 setups? 5?

Same reason old movies are that had 1ch mono, or 2ch stereo originally and have gotten 7.1 DTS HD Master Audio Soundtracks.

Example Old Disney Movies.

I always choose the original audio mix if it's available. Compare the original mono track to the new 7.1 track in Cinderella. There's no comparison.

I think I'll just hold off on buying this until Stallone and Lionsgate decided to re-release it in a Directors cut with 15.1 DTS-MA NEO MATRIX 3D HD, or something in those lines!!

This is the surround sound system that Lionsgate's executives use to screen their movies before releasing them in theatres.

Yeah, an additional 4 speakers on the front of the surround stage is just too much. There's a point where the word clutter comes to mind.

Sort of on this topic, the latest Sound & Vision magazine had an interesting article about Dolby Atmos.

Agreed, especially since it was released theatrically in 11.1. Lucas more than dropped the ball on that one as the BD should at least have been 7.1.

Doubt many care when it's being packaged with such a flick as the Expendables 2.

Curious ... doesn't HDMI 1.4 only support 7.1 audio channels? How will this be overcome. I heard HDMI 2.0 is coming out at the end of the year, and there is rumor of 11.1 channel support. Maybe this is a confirmation?

so the movie will play over your speakers...and inexplicably commandeer your neighbors speakers & start playing out of them too?
