Help Find Movie Title

I need you guys' help for a title of a movie that I saw years ago but that I have very few details about.

I don't know the actors names, nor the director or year it was produced. On top of that, I never saw the movie from the beginning, always started half-way through. What I remember is the story is set I believe in the 1930s with a boy about 14 years old surviving alone without adult supervision in an apartment. If I remember correctly, his father eventually comes pick him up. I don't remember why the father was away. That's pretty much all I remember.

Anyone have an idea which movie this might be?
