Australia Anyone have Black Robe yet?

Listed as 1080 50i.

Features an audio commentary and trailer. Don't think the commentary was on any DVDs so it might be newly recorded...

I watched it last night. First of all I will mention there are no special features besides 1 audio commentary and the theatrical trailer.

Video 1080i
85% of the movie looked great for a 1080i umbrella release. Outdoor scenes showing some great use of colour without too much saturation or banding and showing great depth for this type of release. I noticed some indoor scenes would lack clarity and have too much contrast, this making the picture look washed out, flat and covered in unwanted grain similar to an average DVD artifact. I did see several cue marks which were more noticiable outside as a small burning red flicker near the top right hand corner. All in all most of the scenes were fine. During the first 10 minutes I noticed a fair bit of image pops and random noise present in some scenes almost similar to the effect of a cinema screen, this seems to reduce as the film goes on for the majority of it, maybe I was adapting to it and didn't notice it as much but it certainly didn't bother me after a while.

Audio Dolby Digital 2.0
I can't say this was a great track but it certainly isn't the worst. I noticed a slight echo every now and then almost as if some words spoken were coming out of all of my speakers at once rather than just towards the front where the character was standing. This didn't happen often and I only noticed it after looking out for it again. This track is average and holds up quite well, all though some vocal audio could have been a bit louder.

Video 6.5/10
Audio 6.0/10

This release was definitely better than any other release I have seen for this movie and considering this Blu-ray is only available from Australia at the moment I would not hesitate double dipping from a DVD version.

Interesting review. I have mixed feelings about it based on your review. I wonder where Umbrella sourced their transfer from? Maybe a TV broadcast version? I am still tempted, but probably will wait for it to drop in price a bit.

Regarding the commentary track - I think this is the first time it has been available, as the DVD was bare bones, so this is a pleasant and welcome surprise

It's definitely worth the upgrade but it is a bit unpolished. I doubt we will see another release at all. The commentary seemed interesting too. I heard a guy and a girl arguing about a certain voice over for one of the characters, it was hilarious. I would really like to see what you think about the transfer too. I really don't know where the source came from. Remember I am being pretty hard on it. I am putting it up against "Into the Blue" which I watched just again just before I watched Black Robe and in my opinion is still one of the most visually delightful BDs I own

Ha ha yes Into the Blue was pure eye candy stuff - hard to compete with in terms of crystal clarity and vibrancy.

I think Black Robe went for more of a purposeful drab (dark and grey) look.

I will wait for it to drop a little in price, but will post my feelings here when I get it

Thanks for your thoughts about this as I may buy it. Always liked the movie.

But I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. Your last line above- are you saying Black Robe is one of the most visually delightful BD you own? I think you are saying that but i wanted to be sure, perhaps you are referring to Into the Blue. Probably my fault I don't get it.

And regards to the voice over you mention, I guess I fail to understand what you are getting at there. Do you actually hear a voice over in the film.

I certainly agree we may never see a true Blu Ray of Black Robe but I like the film a lot and take your word it is a upgrade from DVD.

May I ask where you got your copy? Amazon?

Thanks again, and I hope you don't mind my questions. JBrad

Into the Blue was the delightful one
There was a part in the audio commentary I believe where 2 of the people talking had a bit of a disagreement over who was doing a certain voice for a character or something like that. It doesn't interfacer the movie.
It's worth the upgrade over DVD

Picked this up today as the price was reasonable ($NZ10). The back cover states the film is in 2.0, and I can confirm for anyone interested, that it's provided info is correct: Dolby Digital 2.0.

Specs updated on the Database listing.
