United Kingdom How To Train Your Dragon

There's no official release date for this yet but I figured I'd make a thread for it. I saw this recently and loved it, it's certainly one of the better Dreamworks animations, and I know it'll look great on BD.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this one?

PRE-ORDER:

Can't wait for this on Blu. Awesome movie. One of the best animated films ever and as good as anything Pixar has put out, better than some of them. In our top 3 or top 5 for sure.

Not seen it yet, but the trailer actually looks decent.

And its by Chris Sanders who did films like Lilo & Stitch so this will be a definite buy from me.

Depending on when it comes out i'll pre-order, but it'll most likely come out in the last 3-4 months of the year in which case i probably wont pre-order as those months are already gonna be pretty expensive

This is the only 5 star review we got in our Movie Rating thread, so this must be something special

It definitely is special! It has a high score on rottentomatoes as well.

The dragon flight scenes are superior to Avatar's, and they should look stunning on blu ray. The beginning is slightly clunky, but the rest of the film is pure gold.

I'm banking on a good release for this, Dreamworks usually have a very good selection of extras as well (better even than Pixar's).

To be honest I usually find the Dreamworks extras to be very limited and usually very kiddy oriented, and not a patch on Pixar's.

I am interested in seeing the film though, I never got around to seeing it at the cinema.

I disagree (lol you and me do that a lot, we're like the odd couple only nerdier).

Anyways, take Kung Fu Panda for example: PiP commentary, a look at the cast (which we rarely get with Pixar), an actually detailed look a sound, how the characters were animated, the whole noodle thing (that was really random but so interesting!) and tonnes of other stuff. Granted a lot of it was for the kiddies, but heck - that's the market.

Pixar extras are often more about Pixar itself than the movie, which bugs me, and it often seems like we're seeing half of what we could be seeing. Although I very much enjoyed UP's South America expedition doc.

Well, the example I was just going to use was the excellent Pixar documentary on Wall-E.

But then there's also the Cinexplore feature on many Disney movies (not just Pixar). I think the Disney and Pixar releases give a much more balanced set of extras, something for the kids and something for the adults.

Actually, there are others who disagree with me, but are a bit more vocal about doing so.

Hmm, perhaps I should have typed in Caps.

I grant you that the Disney movies are thorough, but they've usually got a good few years of material to get through as (predominantly) catalogue titles. Between Pixar and Dreamworks, I think Dreamworks is slightly superior in terms of varied extras. As a cartoonist I'm very into all the processes of how stuff is done, and Pixar don't seem to go into much detail on that front.

Anyway, each to their own. This release should have a great set of extras, especially with it being so closely linked to the books it was adapted from.

Going off topic here, have you any examples of your artwork?

Always like to see other people's artwork - I used to draw a lot myself, but have gone more into photography and photo manipulation these days.

On the internet I only have a few awful youtube videos I did for a friend that really aren't my best work and are VERY cartoony. I will PM you the link in case I somehow get in trouble with link posting...

Loved this, Toy Story 3 is going to have a hard time against it in awards. I think I'll wait for the 3D Blu-Ray though.

I'll settle for a 2D blu-ray, not that interested in 3D yet.

Pixar always seem to win out... often they deserve it, but they didn't this year due to Coraline being much better than Up in my opinion. HTTYD was the best animated film I'd seen since Coraline, it was really great... but perhaps TS3 will rule them all. 2D'll be fine for me though - I'm apathetic to 3D in the cinema (I did happen to see this in 3D), but have completely no interest in 3D in the home.

I thought they were pretty good, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself. But artists are always toughest on themselves, I feel the same way about some of my photography or the photo manipulations I do for my website.

Aw thank you, you're right I suppose we are our worst critics. I guess I meant that's only one style I draw in and it was the most video-friendly at the time. I have improved. I'm trying to teach myself Flash animation as a hobby but it's like learning a whole new language! Thanks again for checking it out though

I have to agree with you, this is the first time since Shrek where between Pixar and Dreamworks, Dreamworks do actually have a shot, especially at the Oscars. I adored this film, thought this was probably DreamWorks Animation's best film to date. You can tell it's a Chris Sanders feature through its sense of humour and through how Toothless the Dragon looks a bit like Stitch. The 3D is also excellent in there, but I'm the kind of person who wouldn't watch something in 3D more than once, if at all. I'll be find with a regular 2D Blu-ray.

TS3 will have to be amazing to deserve any award over HTTYD. I'm sure it will be great, but will it be good enough? I guess we'll find out in two weeks.

HTTYD even now has a 90% like rating on Rotten Tomatoes from users and a whopping 98% like rating from critics. That has to be nearly impossible.

Default How to Train Your Dragon

Pre-order now up, with release date of November 15th. And I must say for a film that came out in cinemas in April, this has been a ridiculous length of time to wait for the Blu-ray release, but great film nonetheless and a definite Day 1 purchase for me.
