Default Kindle Version VS. iBook version

I was wondering why Kindle versions with A/V material are of lower quality than iBook versions.
For example, the "making of" books for the Star Wars trilogy just came out on Kindle with video and audio. On the iBook, they're 720p (HD) and on the Kindle, it's 480p (SD quality). In fact, if you look at the file sizes, there's a MASSIVE difference.

Another example: the Life Magazine special on the Kennedy Assassination with A/V came out last month. On the Kindle, it's 35mb. The iBook is 305mb. This is unacceptable.

This makes me sway from the Kindle to wanting to buy an iPad. Kindle really needs to step it up. This is unfair to those of us who are devoted to buying a Kindle.

Today, Random House confirmed to me that they provide the raw materials to each distributor and they, in turn, re-encode.

Thank you for contacting Random House Consumer Services. We appreciate your interest in our publications.

The same files are sent to all. The individual eBook retailers compress their files at different levels to make them compatible with the output capabilities of their various proprietary devices.
If you bought the kindle edition, you're not getting everything you should be getting.

For example, here are the sizes for the first book:
Star Wars
Amazon: 317.15 MB
B&N: 427 MB
Itunes: 1.10GB
