USA History of the World in Two Hours (2011) Blu-ray 3D [Region Free] [History Channel]

History of the World in Two Hours 3D Blu-ray

The History Channel has this on sale for 14.99$. I read some good reviews about the "two hour" documentary (actually only 88 minutes, originally broadcast on TV with commercials for 2 hours), and although the documentary finally gathers steam once the dinosaurs roll in, the 3D is inconsistent.

3D varies from 2D images pushed back for depth, to weak 3D, to average 3D, to very strong 3D in a number of shots. Evidence that some shots were converted, some were rendered in 3D, and the fact that different studios probably sent in their material for compilation of this show.

So is it worth it? The inconsistency is distracting, but the shots that are in strong 3D really shine, such as some of the cavemen shots, or mostly the shots of the reptile like creature that wanders out of the ocean and onto land for the first time (great 3D for these shots). There's plenty more in real 3D, but scattered about over the 88 minutes. All of it IS in 3D, but ranges from 2D in 3D depth, weak, medium and strong 3D, the majority being average 3D.

The 3D overall, because of the inconsistency, I'd give a 5/10 3D. Half is really good, half is so-so at best. The only excuse is it's a documentary with various source materials and the age of some of the footage.

When it is about the history of the world I don't really look into the review. I am really fascinated with documentaries that I tend to watch it completely even if the shoot was bad. I am interested because of the information and knowledge I can gather from it.

I don't regret getting this, there are some really good 3D moments. And most important as you suggest, this is a good summary of our progress.

I'd raise my rating of 5/10 for 3D to 6/10 for 3D having seen it a few times now. Some 3D is 9/10, some is 6/10, some is 1/10. That mix equals about 6/10.

Default Issues with this disc..

Hi, new to posting/not so new as a member.

I ordered this title from AP. I received it..it clearly states 3D on the box, and on the disc...
However..it never prompted our player to the typical 3D start up stuff (info/logo) and played in 2D. Returned it, same scenario.
I am feeling foolish, as this might just be/is "operator error".
I KNOW ..somewhere..it works (able to view in 3D)..for someone..Just not me.

So..what might I be missing, here?

Thank you in advance.

I'll have to watch this again, but make sure your blu ray player 3D is up to date if necessary (PS3, PS4), and when you're at the menu, select play, and the top selection is PLAY IN 3D, and play in 2D beneath it. Aside from that, when I just inserted the disc now, my 3DTV auto detected the 3D.

Now I'll have to watch it again since it's in the PS3 3D player.

EDIT: I wanted to add, that you can often manually set your 3D TV to 2D or 3D with the options menu or a button press on the controller, if for some reason it doesn't switch automatically.

EDIT 2: Okay, I just finished watching History of the World in 2 Hours and half of the movie (1 hour and 28 minutes funny enough, since it was originally a TV broadcast), is in 2D scattered throughout the entire film. Not good. I'll gladly take my generous score of 6/10 down to a 4/10. The 4 is for the 3D shots, half of which are medium shots and only a few stand out strong 3D shots (the lizard up close), and the other half is all mild 3D, not counting the 2D shots for the other portion.

This is a mess for 3D overall, and not a good, consistent 3D presentation despite some stand out 3D shots. 4/10 for the 3D.

History of the World in 2 Hours 3D Quick Review

3D Layering: 4/10. 1/2 the film is scattered with shots in 2D. The other random shots have mostly mild, some medium, and rare strong shots. Some better shots look like they were filmed in 3D>
3D Pop Out Count: 2/10. Hardly any pop outs.
3D Framing: This wasn't really intended for 3D for much of the run time, despite a few rare shots that appear filmed in 3D.
Favorite 3D shot: The green lizard on the gravel lifting its legs, strong 3D shot that lasts about 10 seconds. Awesome but rare.
3D Summary: 4/10. A mix of 2D, mild 3D, some medium and rare strong 3D shots. Not good. Thankfully the film itself is a nice summary of the possible and documented events Earth's of history.

I wish it was as simple as this, for me. Mine does not have that option.
(I've checked the menu)
I am using: Samsung BD-C6900 (BR/3D disc player)
All other 3D discs just launch a logo and the prompt to turn on the 3D glasses.
