Default Becket - Is it possible to get a bad copy?

We watched Becket the other night.

I must say that the review here did not mesh with our experience which has me wondering. Is it possible for a BD to play fine but look bad? I'm running an Epson 5020 PJ which looks quite stunning with everything we've watched, except this.

It really looked like a bad transfer 90% of the time, which to my understanding, is not congruent with the reviews. Mushy, lacking color and contrast, really looked like a bad SD much of the time.

Any ideas?

Did your PQ match the quality shown in the screenshots posted? Keep in mind the review was from 2008 so scoring standards aren't the same as they are today (more samples to compare against, etc..). I don't think those screenshots warrant 4 stars. It looks like a DVD upscale to me in fact.

I don't recall any issues with my copy. Pretty sure I watched it on my 100 inch screen via my BENQ projector.

I'm glad you mentioned that. It prompted me to go look at those shots again, only this time in full res. Youre right, they look pretty bad. The review is 5 years old, so I guess that's part of it but frankly I have classics that look WAY better than this transfer. Quiet Man doesn't even have the best source but it's much better.

Well at least now I know it's just a poor source or transfer.
