I've got a Philips 42" Ambilight tv:
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-42PFL7...blurayforum-20 And a Sony BDP-S300 connected with a Monster HDMI cable. But both BD and DVDs are grainy. People are raving about films like Halloween and The Shining and how great the transfers are. I'm seeing them grainy. Is there a setting? Firmware upgrade (I've got 2.0 on my BDP)? Anything? What can I do? |

Have you done an A/B test with the S300 on the HDMI source and a standard DVD player on a component source. Do you see any difference? Maybe rent the DVD of a comparable BD you own and do the test. I find some people visually misinterpret the enhanced clarity of BD for grain. Doing a side-by-side visual will train your eye.

Turn off any "enhance" and NR (noise reduction) features, and turn the sharpness down to the minimum,. Now looking at a well lit shot (daylight exterior shots usually) bring the sharpness up slowly till the image starts to looks sharp and focused and stop, don't keep trying to sharpen it more (oversharpen)

I think your PQ issue is the movies you are watching.
I have a Philips Plasma connected via HDMI and the good transfers like POTC I&II, Transporter, Casino Royal and others look good. I haven't see the two movies you reviewed but I believe that Halloween got some bad press from reviewers from it's PQ lacking. |

Also check that you have the S300 set to output 1080p, I know it sounds stupid, but it can be set to 480p, and the pic does not look good if it is.

Grain is part of the film, Noise is part of Digital Filming, if both aren't present it mean that the film have been toyed with and it's not good.
Unless is Pure CGI like Pixar Stuff... The majority of DVD release are DNR (digital noise reduction) to help the Mpeg2 compression and fit more on a disc. This remove the noise from the picture but also remove fine detail... |
