Not to invoke too much of my personal life here, but I'm a military veteran with various degrees of anxiety. This is obviously not a real medical condition, but does anyone else ever get a little bit worried whenever making a purchase of a title that's been on the market for some time? And you fear that soon as you get it, not long after you start worrying it might get re-issued/re-released and get a BETTER release than the one you bought? Then feel the need to get the new release, and sell off the old release.
It seems like a petty thing, which is why I was hesitant to post about it. But if you're like me, you always want the best release possible for whatever movie it is you adore. I also have to say this hasn't happened much yet on the blu-ray format with me. "Assault on Precinct 13" was really the tipping point with me, now I'm re-evaluating every title in my Amazon wishlist. Anyone else experience this? |

Yeah, double dips are a pain if the studio doesn't offer an exchange or replacement program. I don't consider a change in packaging to be double dipping, though. |

thompsonjohn I feel where you are coming from...it sucks when they announce a better release especially of a title that you just recently bought...in a way it is cool and good but at the same time you are like oh great now I just bought that last release for nothing. I hear ya!

I'm not sweating paying another $15 or whatever a few years down the line too badly, but I generally try to avoid buying discs I reasonably believe could be bettered given a film's popularity/commercial viability. Sony has been surprising me lately reissuing discs that are already good like Taxi Driver with slightly better quality, which is admittedly a bit irritating.

I'm lucky that I started collecting Blu-rays in 2012, and came into this late in the game, because many improved restorations of previous releases have already hit. I still find myself intrigued by new editions of movies that I already own on Blu-ray, though. The upcoming Scream Factory edition of John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 is a case in point.
It's worth noting, however, that all reissues are not necessarily improvements, and this website is helpful in that regard. Many of us are still happily holding on to the first Blu-ray release of Predator, for instance. |

I'm more anxious about buying stuff on DVD that hasn't been announced for Blu-Ray yet. I'd love to own the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series, but I just know if I break down and buy the current DVD sets, they'll announce a Blu release a few weeks later.
![]() As for Blu double dips, I try to buy movies as cheaply as humanly possible and be an edjucated consumer and not be stupid and buy clearly substandard releases, unless they're dirt-cheap or the chance of a better reissue is extremely slim. I'm perfectly happy with the current Exorcist Blu, so I'm not bothering with that 40th anniversary reissue later this year. Same with the new Halloween...if it shows up for five bucks in a future U&S promo, I'll bite, but I'm pleased with the old disc. I have a hard enough time buying movies once, so I'm not re-purchasing the same movies multiple times because of lossless audio, or a brand new-ten-minute featurette I'll watch once and forget about afterwards. |

I don't worry because Ebay is my friend. Just made $22 off four of my Friday the 13th films. Sure you don't get what you paid for, but at least you get something back, and you were able to enjoy the films for a while before you sold them. And some movies actually go up in value, like the 2-disc Star Wars DVDs that contained the unaltered versions.

I've been battling depression, anxiety, and OCD all of my life, and I'm just now getting a really good handle on it all (I'm 49).
I find that limiting my collection to only stuff I will re-watch really helps out. I've also found that in cases where I only want one film in series (Indiana Jones for one) that custom covers can be your friend! Good luck to you. Last edited by Lemmy Lugosi; 08-05-2013 at 06:50 PM. |

I also suffer from anxiety. I just make sure a release I get is the best currently available and don't open it until its time to watch it and keep it in excellent condition anyway. That way if a re-release is announced (and you'll need to accept that most stuff gets re-released in a better version), I can chuck it on eBay and make back some of (if not everything I payed or more!) to put towards the re-release.
The key to dealing with having a passion for blu-rays and having an anxiety disorder is acceptance. You need to accept that there is always going to be a better version for most stuff. You need to let yourself just enjoy what you've got and when that time comes, deal with it then. As they always say, take it one day at a time and just enjoy what you've got ![]() |

Then I got "John Carpenter's Vampires" because I'm tired of waiting and it has commentary. Then when I got it, I got bit in the ass because it's a full screen only re-issue. Can't win, right? Don't know why Sony re-issued so many titles FULL SCREEN only when they're all for the 4k transfers on blu-ray. It's like polar opposites here. Then I got "Christine" special edition as well, considering we all know the status of that on blu-ray. |

This is really only an issue for me when I'm considering buying something that's only available on DVD. I just know the Blu-ray will be announced within days of my purchase. Multiple Blu-ray editions don't really bother me. I only double dip when it's a significant improvement (for the most part).
