Default Live Free or Die Hard: Unrated Blu-ray edition?

I really love the film but I feel the superior version is the unrated cut but it is only available for DVD!? Any word when or if it will be released in 1080p glory?

hey now, kids watch blu-ray, and of course parents want a rated version for family night watching john mcclain slay bad guys left and right, we wouldn't want to corrupt them with a real die hard release

seriously, i still don't understand why on earth they released a rated version let alone only the rated version, shouldn't they be giving stuff to the blu-ray and limiting the dvd to further adoption

Because, apparently, the unrated version wasn't finished when the BD was done.

If it's a choice between a compromised version of a movie on BD or a definitive version of a movie on DVD, then the DVD wins in my book!

Like I said, the better version is out on DVD, regardless of the AV specs!

I'm with Spymaster; as bleak as watching SD-DVDs is these days, I won't accept the truncated version on BD even if it was for $0.99.

Guys, they shot the movie as PG-13. That is the correct version of the movie.

After that was done, they went in and ADR'd additional cursing, and digitally added blood. There might be some things that were cut for content that were added back in, but they also digitally manufactured much of it to give it that unrated feel.

The "unrated" cut is not a director's cut. It is not automatically better. It's in the same vein as any other EXTENDED CUT. Something that might be interesting to fans, but not necessarily the way the film is SUPPOSED to be.

And seriously, extended cuts aren't always better. I'm actually mad that the Wedding Singer contains an additional scene in the movie that I had never seen before. There's a reason things get cut, and often, it is foolish to demand that they be added back in!

Ahaha I noticed far more ADR'd dialog in the PG-13 cut than in the unrated cut. There was a site that compaired the two versions and the PG-13 version was far more artificial.

I would get the current version and be happy with it. Fox may never reissue it in an unrated edition on Blu-ray. The only impetus might be another Die Hard movie, but I have not heard or seen anything about a possible sequel.

I am a die hard fan and the unrated version is a much better cut of the film. The voice over work in the theatrical cut is horrible and even though the audio and picture quality is great in the blu ray I cannot justify buying a blu that is not even the best version of the film released.

I completely agree. The only aspect I like better in the PG-13 version is the "I was out of bullets" line. That's SO John McClane and I've no idea why they messed with it! The revised "X number of people are killed by cars every day" was just horribly wishy-washy.

If they'd restore the original line I'd be WELL pleased with this Die Hard!

Actually, it was decided to go PG-13 partway through the production process so that it would reach a larger audience. Some of the "restored" language was already there but ADR'd to be much cleaner for the lower rating. Also, a few of the "restored" scenes were the ones that were replaced to achieve the lower rating.

Here is a detailed comparison of the two from Movie-Censorship.com

I bought the blu for less than $5 used.

I can't imagine the unrated version being much better, no matter what you do the movie is a bit of a fail. It's still fun though, so it was worth picking up.

I have not picked up the blu because I'm waiting for the Unrated. I saw that on DVD and loved it and while I love the PQ/AQ of LFODH, I'm waiting for the unrated blu.

I'll only buy this version if it's official that the unrated blu never comes out.

Actually, that's wrong. It was shot as an R, recut for theatrical as a PG-13.

Director Len Wiseman commented on the rating, saying "It was about three months into it [production], and I hadn't even heard that it was PG-13."

The ADR was done for the PG-13 version to take our some expletives.
