Italy I soliti ignoti (Monicelli, 1958)

Another classic coming from Cristaldi. Street date: Dec 2. Artworks and specs TBA.

Pre-order

This is Criterion's artwork (pretty poor):

These are official posters which could be used:

An embarrassment of riches!

Default English subtitles?

Thanks for the post!

The Amazon listing doesn't mention English subtitles, although that doesn't mean anything. Do you know if they'll be included?

The DVD features Eng subs, but that means nothing (see Divorzio all'italiana). At present, no further info available, sorry.

Both the back cover and DVD-store only mention Italian HoH and four audio options in Italian... Anyways, I'll report, when I get it.

Seems like there are English subtitles but they’re not great.

Edit: never mind, Italian subs only

You're misinformed, there are only Italian subs.

Thanks, I was going off a couple Amazon reviews but maybe they were referring to a different version.

(posting in this thread as it's the only one that shows up for the dvd listing)
my wife just bought me the criterion dvd from amazon, and it looks..very poorly printed, like a possible bootleg/counterfeit? it does show the "disc made in mexico" printing on the rear of the wrap (not the stretchy shrinkwrap kind), but i only got into criterions in the blu-ray days, not dvd, so i have nothing to compare to, quality-wise. is it just because it's super-old, and it's actually legitimate? i haven't opened it yet, in case i need to return. thanks!

Just realised the Italian title is "The Usual Suspects". Seems everyone has stolen from this movie! Did you open it in the end or return it? I can't decide whether to buy the Criterion dvd or wait for an English-friendly Blu-ray.

we wound up opening and watching, as she really wanted me to see it, and it was enjoyable! i figured the chances of a bootleg going through the trouble of printing the "made in mexico" on the wrap would be low, but of course i'm still not sure, and haven't bought any other criterion dvds to check (i have only ever purchased their blu-rays so far).

i did some more digging into streaming options (other than the criterion channel, which has a 14-day trial), and did find it on an italian site, but i didn't try to go through with signing up to see whether it was free: https://www.raiplay.it/programmi/isolitiignoti

Like you I buy Criterion blu-rays but I do have about a dozen Criterion dvds. The packaging on them does look a bit cheaper but that's how it was 15-20 years ago. I'm deciding whether to take up an ebay offer of £10 on Big Deal. It's an ok price but there'll probably be some announcement of a blu-ray release a week after I buy. Such is the way of things.
