Red Chillies HD

Guys,

I finally took a plunge this weekend and brought myself ASOKA (2001), RAM JAANE (1995), ENGLISH BABU DESI MEM (1996) & KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA (1993) off Red Chillies (Yahoo) and Google Play.

My reasons for buying these in HD were simple. Red Chillies are digitally remastering them before making them available in HD and especially in 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus on Google Play.

Although PQ might just be north of 720p and definitely below BRD standards of Full HD 1080p, I could not believe how much I enjoyed ASOKA in HD with 5.1 DD+ with 7.1 setup. You really get the scope of how well it was shot by ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan who happens to be directing it too. Such a well made movie with terrific chemistry between asoka and his brothers, asoka and mother, asoka and his friend, asoka the nomad versus asoka the tyrant vs karishma, asoka the lover vs karishma.

The ending was thoroughly satisfying. Sivan made an entertaining flick that was ahead of its times imo. If you can fast forward the songs and get to the real meat, Asoka becomes fascinating power play and its repurcussions that Asoka, the journey man has to live with all that guilt. I loved it.

Great sound design and sound-mix presented in 5.1 DOLBY DIGITAL PLUS. Huge ace for massive movie like this. SRKs performance is cold, cunning, calculative and reflective. Only he could've played this part to perfection.

Rotten Tomatoes have it at 100% Fresh and rightly so. Highly underrated period drama after watching ordinary just "above ave" DEVDAS, BAJIRAO MASTANI, JODHAA AKBAR



RAM JAANE (1995) was non-5.1 regular stereo in 720 HD. I cannot believe I enjoyed SRKs over-the-top performance (definitely needed to overact for this piss-poor screenplay and direction). Vibrant colors but unbalanced. Clean print. fleshed out details. you can actually "see" the background for the first time. . Crystan clear stereo sound off Youtube. A cheesy 90s gangsta angels-with-dirty-faces copied flick but throughly enjoyable for SRKs over-the-top "bad guy" image. He is literally in every seen. Talk about over-exposure.


ENGLISH BABU DESI MEM (1996) was again non-5.1 stereo in 720p HD. This was the 1st time I saw this movie ever! Surprised it had decent story and interesting one at that too. My crush on Sonali Bendre has been fully renewed btw. Again. nicely digitally remastered print. clean. fleshed out details. Natural looking colors but unbalanced. Crystal clear stereo sound off Youtube again. I only wish SARFAROSH (1998) BRD looked half as good as this print. I actually think its a decent movie with Bendre's best performance to date ever.

KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA (1993) is again non-5.1 stereo in 720 HD. I'll review it later as I have not started watching it.

WARNING

I had a slight buffering problem with Roku 4 (while watching ASOKA with 5.1 DD+). Resolution drop to almost 320p was clearly visible here and there and also audio drop.

It definitely cannot be internet speed. I have Fios 50/50 "Wired" (Not Wireless!).

I may have to invest in Roku Ultra as I'm planning to buy PARINEETA, PARINDA, 1942 A LOVE STORY, EKLAVYA, LOOTERA. All in 5.1 Dolby Digita Plus.

GHAYAL, AAA, PAKEEZAH, DUNYA are non-5.1 stereo only.

Before investing in OLED, Roku Ultra might be required here just because of file sizes and lossy data.

Will it just be SRKs latest garbage movies only or 1990s catalog titles will be interesting (ASOKA, PBDHH and before)

Hope I did not wasted money on RAAM JAANE, ASOKA, KHKN etc etc so far.

Lets wait and see.

The deal is good news for those in the USA for all SRK movies plus the latest one Dear Zindagi will be the first new SRK movie to be streamed.

Now one can just wait for Netflix to get the movie and watch it in HD.

If Netflix could get some deal with Eros they would have almost all new Hindi movies but Eros is pushing the Eros Now platform which is a hurdle
