Default Another stupid George Lucas question

I know a lot of people are sick of his name showing up here, but I have a question that I haven't seen here yet. Lucas (or someone) said Star Wars wouldn't be released until one format is dominant.

What contitutes "dominant"? One format goes away completely? Or the sales figures are slanted 75/25, or 80/20, or 90/10?

I would have to assume by "dominant" it would mean that one format is established and unequivocally the successor to the format that preceded it.

I am afraid only Lucas himself could answer that for you.

It is truly unfortunate that a moron like him has control of such a great series. If they would release all the Star Wars with PCMs and AVC encodes that would deal a heavy blow to HDDVD.

Dominant = a huge user base to make sure he sells millions of copies.

If you look at the current top titles like 300 for Bluray or even Transformers for HD's side......those haven't even come close to a million sells. George Lucas is all about the $$$ and I can assure he wants to make sure he can make a lot when it's released on Bluray. When he says dominant it's just code for I'll wait to release my money maker when I can be assured it can make the biggest impact on my wallet.

I had a meeting with stuido reps back in Sept and the Fox rep claimed that Starwars was originally slated for this 4th qtr (yeah right) but they had to pull it. He said to expect it next year (which again unless BR sales jump considerably I doubt that as well).

The BDA should offer him $150M for the original trilogy. It would be a better deal than Paramount.

Correct. The ratio between HD-DVD and Blu Ray does not matter. The ration between Blu Ray and DVD is what matters.

That's not a stupid George Lucas question.

A stupid George Lucas question would be "Where is his neck?" or something.

As for SW on Blu, I'd expect it in '09 at the earliest. Nothing to do with the format war -- their '06 DVD rerelease fared comparatively poorly, and the non-anamorphic OT brought them a lot of flack, so Lucasfilm canned the idea of a megaboxset that Bill Hunt hinted at around this time last year. I bet they did a lot of work on it, though.

But it's probably not going to see the light of day next year, as they don't want to steal the thunder from the IJATKOTCS high-def release (wow, that's like the longest acronym ever). So once Lucasfilm gets out of their current Indy phase, hopefully a SW Blu-ray set will be just the ticket to raise awareness of their SW TV series.

I don't know what Mr. Lucas considers 'dominant' (well, maybe Lady Heather... but that's another thread in itself), but I do know that in the marketing world 90/10 is considered market dominance for the most part (some industries demand a different spread based on a ton of factors; however, BD/HDDVD 90/10 would be relevant).

Keep in mind that this would also include all the computer based products, handheld products, recorders, etc., not just disc sales of movies. Movies are but a part of the overall picture. If you consider everything, for example, you'd find that BD actually has quite a bit higher % than 64 right now.

I have no idea what he means by dominant, but I think if you remove the words "Another" and "question" from the thread title, you will have your answer.
