Default BDs you used to be happy with, but no more

Hi everyone,

last night I watched "The Dark Knight" on BD again, for the first time in a long while, and the transfer looked truly hideous to me.

Back when it came out, I thought it looked pretty good, not stellar, like some claimed, but perfectly acceptable, but yesterday I was severly distracted by the overly processed look, the EE, the DNR, the bandings, ringing, and other instabilities, almost to the point where I wanted to watch something else.

I was shocked at how bad it looked.
Luckily, I don't like the film much anyways, but I remembered it looking much better.

So, has there ever been a time when you watched one of your beloved BDs again, and it turned out to be a disappointment on repeat viewings??

Another example would have to be SW- Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

I was quite please the first time around, since it was a monumental upgrade from the atrocious DVD, but now it is much more of a disappointment to me, as I would love it to look as great as it can.

So, what are yours?

Or am I the only one?

The novelty of Blu-rays still has not worn off for me, since I've only had my Blu-ray player and HDTV for two months. I have been impressed with everything that I have watched.

I sold my DVD copy of The Dark Knight earlier this month with the intention of replacing it with a Blu-ray. I have not bought the Blu-ray yet, though, although I've seen it on used racks and at the store for ridiculously inexpensive prices. I suppose that I'm just burned out on Nolan's Batman movies. I'll probably have a hankering to watch this film out of the clear blue one day and be compelled to buy the Blu-ray then.

Oh yeah, T2-Skynet edition. I first picked it up in 2009 and it looked pretty decent, i did have a different tv then i do now, but i watched recently and couldnt even finish it. It looks so horrible, it looks like it was DNR'ed to death. The picture is just too hopelessly soft for me, yuck!

I used to be happy with my 007 movies but now that I just ordered the Bond 50 set, I may just sell them.

Don't get me wrong. The "novelty" hasn't worn off for me either. Not at all.

I am still utterly excited to watch films with nice BD transfers.
I doubt that will go away anytime soon, as there is always a new film that blows you away in terms of PQ and SQ, and old ones too.

The thing is, there are some discs that I initially thought were quite alright, that look pretty awful now, such as the mentioned Dark Knight disc, and TPM.

I am sure TDK is still lightyears better than the DVD.

Blu will only get 'Old' when the 4K evolution goes mainstream and those of us with large collections are burdened with to buy or not to buy all the remastered 4K titles.....

I'm going to keep from getting sucked into "Super Bit" as long as I can.

Hahaha. Yeah, the racehorse sped up right out of the gate in this instance, but I will not be continuing at this rate.

I already had a handful of Blu-rays beforehand, because I planned ahead and owned certain movies in the Blu-ray/DVD combo packages.

The rest was made possible by using money that I had saved up in advance, by taking advantage of some amazing December sales,by buying used Blu-rays that I wanted from used stores in my area, and by selling off a lot of my DVD collection.

Dark Knight to me has never looked great, even when it was released. Trust me though, the DVD is an absolute shocker. I mean, its awful.

Men In Black has quite a lot of obvious EE in places.

Oh yeah, the DVD is tragically bad. I haven't seen a worse retail DVD from such a major studio.

I certainly wouldn't mind new transfers for many films. 2001, AClockwofk Orange, Robocop, Mona Lisa, Long Good Friday, True Romance....

Actually, as long as I love the film, I don't mind buying the new transfer.

I agree about 4K tho. Honestly I think I will only upgrade about half (maybe less) of my collection

Batman Begins.

Horrible black levels in a movie like that are distracting

I'm not sure if this can be included but I was bought the standard edition of "Lawrence of Arabia" by my wife for Christmas. It's excellent, but now the special edition has dropped to $45.

So tempting.... but I'm not sure how I'd explain why I bought the same film twice.

Once the SE drops under 30 I'll double dip too. If not, I'm fine with my UK import.

That's why I still haven't bought it, and never will, if it doesn't receive a proper remaster.

But, did you like the transfer the first time around?

Trading Places also really bothered me the 2nd time around with the horrible EE and DNR. Yuk!
