Question Animated 3D movies that might just be too childish for adults

Tricky to word the title of this post, but basically, i've been picking up a lot of animated 3D movies since getting my setup. Please bear in mind i watched virtually no animation before getting a 3D TV. Now i watch quite a bit. I just wanted to gauge people's opinions on which movies they think might perhaps just be too childish for adults to enjoy, so i can avoid picking up any kids movies, that really are solely for kids. I bring this up because i got Animals United, and whilst the animation is nice enough and the 3D is great, the movie is really aimed at a very young audience and is something that i don't think a grown up (even one who's young at heart!) can enjoy. Are there any others like this? For example, how about Rio and Megamind? These are two that i have a chance of picking up and don't want to, if they really are just for kids.

To counter this, one that might crop up is A Turtles Tale, however i let that one slide as the 3D is the best (as we all know).

Megamind is hilarious if you like Will Ferrell. I haven't seen Rio yet, but it looks okay to me.

Yogi Bear is one that I didn't like at all despite great 3D. Not sure if it was aimed only at kids or just plain bad. A few others on here seemed to find some enjoyment from it though.

I drag my boyfriend to animated flicks all the time and he tolerates them but funnily enough, he was the one who INSISTED we buy Megamind - and he's watched it at least 3x since we saw it in theatres originally. He enjoyed Rio but he hasn't watched it since I chose to purchase it. He still quotes Megamind - lol.

So I would def recommend Megamind based on my boyfriend's reaction to it.
I'm biased but would recommend Rio too.

Edit: Bolt is great!! And if you haven't picked up Rise of the Guardians - buy it while it's on sale, you shan't regret it!

I'm in the same boat as you. I own a ton of animated films (both 2d and 3d), I think I originally told my wife it would be for our kid(s) but that was only half true. I am not familiar with Animals United but I think you are safe with the majority of Pixar, Dreamworks, Disney as they tend to have a good amount of everything for all ages. As far as Rio and Megamind, I've seen/own both in 3d and don't think either of them are too "childish". Its certainly possible some movies cater more to a younger audience... Bolt? I havent seen it but that may be an example of one..

I enjoyed Bolt. It has some pretty funny moments and a sweet, dog-loving story that I bet most people can relate to.

Thanks for the tips guys, i am tempted by both Megamind and Rio. However i'm not much of a Will Ferrel fan, so that slightly puts me off Megamind. The animation in Rio looks a bit better, but then that movie also looks to be for kids a bit more. I'll see.

The Lorax
Good 3D but the movie was definitely for kids only. I was bored watching it.
Bolt I think is another movie geared more towards kids with the humor.
Megamind is a great movie for all ages though and the 3D is fun to watch.

Ice Age: Continental Drift is another one that falls into this category for me. I liked the short segments with Scrat, but all the other characters were just annoying.

For family animation, I think rottentomatoes ratings give a pretty good estimate of what percentage of adults will like the movie.

I agree most major release animated films have some good adult bits within them.

I actually really enjoyed Bolt and didn't think it was too kidish at all. I did think Chicken Little was too much of a kids movie though.

Happy Feet is one that immediately comes to mind. Despicable Me to an extent, Cars and The Smurfs (if you consider it animation). Despicable Me ain't that bad but I couldn't sit through The Smurfs.

I haven't seen Megamind but it seems to give off the same vibe as The Incredibles. I'd check it out if I were you.

Ronal the Barbarian would make you change your mind, and so would the Prodigies.

I recently sold a few of my animated 3D movies after determining that I would not probably watch them again. Some were too kiddy in the long run. When 3D first came out, I was buying just about everything but "I growed up reel fass."

Basically, it's the Weird Foreign Ugly-Critter Imports, like Animals United (and like Sammy, mein herr) that think that only the kiddies go to see that shiny 'Merkan CGI from Dreamworks. (That's why most of the covers have them all racing over the hill into our faces, so it'll look just like Madagascar or SharkTale. The European markets tend to like the visually translatable critters of Madagascar and Ice Age, since the more culturally US-based stories like Cars or Monsters vs. Aliens don't tend to find as much connection overseas.)
Most of the Pixar, DW and even recent Disney from this country is reasonably fit for "grown ups" (sic) At least, that's what Dreamworks thinks, anyway, even if the results come off a bit immature.
In fact, first instinct from the title was "ARE there any??", but then you had to go and mention Sammy and the danged forr'ners.

Megamind is within the boundaries of an adult audience, if you call imitating the style of network sitcoms "grown up". Rio comes in a bit less, since without Chris Meledandri, BlueSky is forced to slavishly rote-imitate every single thing they ever saw Dreamworks do in the last ten years ("loser" hero, rap-star and/or slacker buddy, karaoke party at the end).
And watching Wreck-It Ralph's unjust defeat at the Oscars, you wouldn't think it possible that Disney had made a more mature and intelligent movie than Pixar had that year with Brave, but there you are. Some things just happen.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking about Rio also, which I saw a newer trailer and it looks more interesting than the short TV spots that just show the pranks most times.

Same with Rise of the Guardians. if I based seeing it only on the TV Spots, I would have never seen it, as most of the time, they show the cute bell elves pranking around, making it seem the whole movie is about them when they're only in 1% of the movie.

Rated PG I'd say would be aimed for grown ups also: Rated G for kids.

Recommendations in BOLD:
Bolt has a nice story, agreed. Good 3D. All ages.
How to Train Your Dragon is way better than I imagined it would be. Great 3D. PG
Smurfs 3D: So so 3D, kids movie. PG
Yogi Bear 3D: Interesting 3D, all ages if you consider the romance aspect. PG
Polar Express 3D: Kids movie, great 3D. Rated G
Monster House 3D: Good 3D, all ages. Rated PG. Think of the Goonies.
Kung Fu Panda I and II: Great 3D. All ages. Rated PG
Open Season 3D: Strong 3D. All ages, PG.
Gnomeo & Juliet 3D: Good 3D, Kids movie. Rated G
Monsters vs Aliens 3D: Nice 3D. All ages. PG
Rise of the Guardians: Great 3D. All ages. PG
Legend of the Guardians: Nice 3D. PG.
Madagascar 3 3D: Strong 3D. Rated PG. Better movie than I anticipated.
The Croods: Classic Looney Tunes violence. Rated PG. All ages. Strong 3D.

Despicable Me I and II: Those intentionally obnoxious yellow pill people are for kids IMO. Haven't seen these. But keep seeing at Cinemark these pills turning in a lightbulb in 3D.
Ice Age movies: Haven't seen them in 3D.
Happy Feet: Kids movie from the trailers, haven't seen them though to be fair. Heard the 3D was good.

Have you watched Tekken: Blood Vengeance? It's a little slow at first, but has some great 3D and some excellent action in the end. The animation is good, not Dreamworks good or nothing, but still very good, and the story and action are not aimed at children.

Disney and Pixar are always a safe bet. Apart from Cars 2, all of their 3D films are pretty fun for adults to watch. Some of them might be boring, but none of them are "too childish"

Agreed on Yogi Bear, Ice Age... Dreamworks is hit or miss with me. But the Kung Fu Panda series and How To Train Your Dragon are excellent.

I think Legend of the Guardians would be pretty good for an adult too. It's like LOTR but shorter and with owls.

I didn't expect to like Despicable Me, but it's actually pretty watchable. I was surprised to find myself really liking the story and comedy.
The trailers are soooooooo annoying though. I'm not sure if DM2 will even be good because The Lorax was one of those movies that were "dumbed" down for kids.

Two animated films that are great for adults, that are not CGI are Paranorman and Coraline. Coraline's 3D is really great IMO
