Serpico - not great Lumet, underwhelming
Catch 22 - never seen it This Boy's Life - very good coming of age film. Great performances by both DiCaprio and DeNiro. His Girl Friday - Excellent film. Great chemistry between the leads. Hard Eight - Least favorite PT Anderson film, but still a good and worthwhile debut. It's pretty much a showcase for Phillip Baker Hall. Painted Veil - I've only seen the Naomi Watts version, good flick, great performance by Watts (oscar nom worthy at least) Most depressing one out of this list. |

I saw Serpico a few weeks ago. It was decent, nothing I'd watch again. Those movies in the 70s...they needed better editors. Felt like it needed to be trimmed some. But Pacino is amazing.

Thank you! I find most 70's movies to be highly overrated. There are probably less than 20 movies from that decade that I would say I really liked.

Watch Serpico on Friday and wasn't much of a fan. It's great performance from Pacino but the film just desperately lags to get you invested in what is going on.

Only one I've seen on the list is "The Painted Veil", agree with previous poster on it, Naomi Watts is great and Edward Norton is very good too.
I originally saw it on DVD and bought the German blu-ray release on Amazon a few years ago (if you click the amazon link you'll see its listed as playable in regions A,B, and C, which is another way of saying its region-free. ) -I'm in the USA and never had a problem on any of my blu-ray players, which includes a PS3. http://www.amazon.com/Painted-Veil-B...e+painted+veil |

Catch 22 - could not get into it. turned off after 20 mins. This Boy's Life- great film. Great performances. ("you can get it doggy style or you can get it laying on your side. this is my house and I make the rules!") His Girl Friday - never seen it. Hard Eight - excellent PTA film. Painted Veil - very good for what it is. liked this a lot more than I thought I would |

Serpico is badass, I'd recommend it.
Hard Eight is also great. A worthy debut from a great director. |

I've seen Hard Eight. It's good, but not great and my least favorite of Paul Thomas Anderson's films. To be fair though, it was originally titles "Sydney" and wasover 2 hours. Hard Eight is a movie I would recommend to Paul Thomas Anderson fans and will only recommend to others when the original is released.

I saw This Boy's Life at the theater in the early 1990s. It features some brilliant acting from Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, and it's a rather fascinating look at the unpleasant undercurrents of life in small-town America in the 1950s/early 1960s. The nerdy little girl in the movie was played by Eliza Dushku, funnily enough.

To OP, I've seen Serpico and it's an entertaining film, but certainly not Lumet's best or most memorable. |
