Default 1080i vs. 1080p

What is the technical difference between 1080i vs. 1080p? I've been told one is not better than the other, so if 1080p is better...why?

Thanks,

Gibbs

Right from the horses mouth:

"Progressive (p) scan is a better type of scan because it doubles the amount of times the TV displays the image per one second in comparison to interlaced (i). Still, the difference between 720p and 1080i is so minimal that is isn’t an issue at all. While 1080p is better than 720p and 1080i, very few programs are made in this resolution"

There is a lot of good information on this site regarding this but, 1080i means that there are 1080i being processed interlaced, every other one. Typically, 1080i sets have a 1266x768 resolution. A 1080p set processe 1080 lines all at once. A 1080p set has a 1920x1080 resolution. There are more "dots" on a 1080p set. The more dots, the more detail. You have to get a bigger set to see the difference though. Also, there are no television broadcasts in 1080p, only blu-ray and hd dvd display a true 1080p picture.

if you are talking about a 50in Plasma in 720P, is it worth getting one that will do 1080P if you watch a lot of Blu-Ray's ? I just ask due to you commenting about " you need to have a bigger set to see the difference" ?
Thanks

I think so. I have a 1080p plasma and love it. Typically you need a 46" or larger set at about 6-8ft to tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p. If you watch more TV, then get a 720 plasma. If you use your set for mainly movies (like me) then go with the 1080p.

There is just such a plethora of good information about this topic on this forum that it is hard to cover here. It is one of those "for further reading" type of thing.

This is true, it's almost like beating a dead horse. We've had very educated discussions on the topic and I feel, and have been told (won't name the names of those who have sent me PMs), that people are just too lazy to use the search tool.

I have proven multiple times that a great 1080i/720p beats the crap out of a lousy 1080p. On the other hand... put a great 1080p beside a great 1080i/720p and the 1080p will wim hands down. It's all processing and just like there was a huge difference between Zenith and Loewe televisions in the past, HD is no different. You are making a DRASTIC mistake if anyone thinks all 1080p looks better than all 1080i/720p. Do NOT assume higher numbers automatically mean better in all situations.

thanks a lot, yeah I have a Plasma 720p now, but it is my main movie room and it's a 50in and we sit right at about 7-8 feet. I think I am going to upgrade to the PDP5010-FD from Pioneer. That looks sweeeeeeet

Very true. I have seen a 1080p Westinghouse LCD that I would pass over for a 720p Samsung LCD.

I definetly think its worth it. My friend has a 1080i 42" set and I have a 47" 1080p set and I hooked my ps3 up to his, and I am telling you the difference is quite noticeable. Anyone that says you cant tell hasnt tried too.

"Yeah I have a Chevy Cavalier now. I am going to upgrade to something a little sportier, so I am going to go get a Viper."

That pioneer is a SWEET set. An outstanding TV. You will love it. If you make time in your week for blu, then that Pioneer will be perfect.
