Non-Resumable Movies?

Is this a disc limitation or a player limitation? Seems most of the ones I own do not save your place. It's very aggravating to have to pause a movie to take care of something only to have to come back and hit pause or play again every so often so the player doesn't turn itself off or drop to the main player menu.
