So before I leave for work this morning I was wasting my time on YouTube and stumbled across episodes of a 1990 series called "The Bradys", a drama follow up to "The Brady Bunch". I'd never heard of the followup before.
Still, I do like the idea of revisiting series after a period of time (I'm a fan of the new 'Dallas' having never even watched the original), and doing them slightly more dramatic. Like how sequel TV movies to these shows sometimes were (looking at you Growing Pains) What sitcoms do you think have the potential to come back but in a slightly more serious fashion? Why? The Honeymooners:
A mandatory "Green Law" goes into effect forcing the Gotham Bus Company to close their doors for good as the city turns all bus lanes into pedicab lanes. Ralph, no longer receiving his $62.00 a week salary, turns to hustling his friends in the pool hall for fast cash which he then uses to support his binging & purging habit. Alice, who has developed a Prozac dependency after years of being psychologically abused by Ralph with his "crazy hair-brained" schemes" and threats of physical violence, starts to confide in, and develop feelings for, the dance instructor...Carlos. Little does she know, Carlos is being threatened -with deportation- to work as a male escort by Mrs. Manicotti, who is running a brothel out of her apartment. Trixie, who is having an affair with the recently dishonorably discharged Tommy Mullins, starts to wonder where exactly her husband goes at night when he tells her he's just going "for a walk". A vengeful Harvey and his little friend George return to look for payback from Ralph for humiliating Harvey in the gym. The Pilot ends with an unknown assailant shooting up the Raccoon lodge's poker game. Alice seeking comfort from Carlos after hearing about her Uncle Leo's massive stroke. The former bus president Mr. Marshall taking his own life amid a corruption investigation. Harvey kidnapping Alice's mother and Ralph trying to use the leftover counterfeit money to get her back...which enrages George...who then shoots Ralph's back-up guy...Teddy Oberman! And the residents of 328 Chauncey St. being left stunned by the vicious murder of local girl Judy Connors who has become the 8th victim of the "Swanee Savage". The psycho who strips himself naked -except for a hat and vest of course- and hums Swanee River to his victims before he skins, partially eats, and then dumps their mutilated remains in the sewers Last edited by mrrant_33; 04-14-2013 at 08:06 AM. |

Totally 'Roseanne', the most serious sitcom I've seen so far.
In many episodes laughs gave way to drama, and unless other sitcoms, its main purpose wasn't to be fun. 'Mad About You' could also come back with a 'more serious' setting and be a light drama. |

The Munsters
Which Bryan Fuller reimagined as a one-hour drama (well, dramedy) called Mockingbird Lane. If NBC had picked it up along with Hannibal, he planned to alternate production, both series having 13-episode seasons, with Mockingbird Lane airing in the fall, and Hannibal airing in the spring. Alas, NBC passed on it. The pilot is available on iTunes. McHale's Navy. Which, interestingly enough, was actually first conceived as a drama. The original 60-minute pilot, "Seven Against the Sea" starred Ernest Borgnine as McHale, and aired on the anthology series Alcoa Premiere in the spring of 1962. It was retooled as a sitcom, and the series started that fall. Only one other cast member carried over to the series, though a couple of the other characters from McHale's crew were carried over but played by different actors. |
