Default PS3 System Problem...

Well, this week has been a head scratcher. My PS3 for some reason keeps freezing up while I play whenever a game has to load to a cut screen. I let it stand for several minutes and I then have to go pull the power cord behind the system and plug it back to restart it. Then, I have to deal with that whole; "We need to do this and it takes two to three hours to complete, even though it's only two minutes". I got the system for Christmas in 2011. I don't really play it that often, but, it's been getting some usage these past few weeks with the new Army of Two. But, this is also happen on GTA IV as well.

How well ventilated is it? Because that is cause for problems many times.

On the small little stand I have, it's pulled out so it's not completely back against the wall on the stand. I usually play by having the controller plugged into the USB slot since my couch isn't that far from my 32".

Mine blows a lot of heat out of the back of it so I have it far removed from the wall. I can't help but think that may be some of the issue you're having but I've never really had issues with PS3 systems. If it were an Xbox, we'd talk lol

Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings

I'm working on the assumption that you have a wireless router in your house because most people now-a-days do. Enter the information for your home network. Once you set it up, it will connect to your network and the internet automatically every time you turn it on. Then if there's an update available it will tell you as soon as you fire it up and it connects.

Or, depending on how close your console is to your router, you can forego the wireless and run an ethernet cable directly from the router to the PS3. Same deal. When you turn it on it will connect to the internet and inform you of any update.

No, I do not have a wireless router & probably will not get 1 in the near future. Would u still know how to set it up w/o? Does it matter?

Updating firmware is useful, as it improves a lot of functions on the PS3, including BD playback.

How are you getting internet at home (or do you have any home internet)?

By pc, I am just not interested in a wireless router(for me the less complicated the better)! If I have to update it, can I not just update it directly on the PS3, & how would I do that, as I said I am not tech. savvy!!

But who provides your internet service? What type of device provides internet to your PC? Do you have a cable or DSL modem? I don't mean to talk down to you, but generally you have a modem provided by your internet company and that can give you internet access usually on one device, in your case the PC. You put a router in between the modem and PC so that you can access the internet with other devices at the same time that may or may not be directly connected to the modem. You really need to add a router to get internet service to your PS3 or other devices. You can also get an multi-function device that's a modem and router combined.

ETA: Now that I think about it, I seem to recall that you can download a PS3 update on your PC, move it to a USB flash drive, and use that flash drive in the PS3 to run the update, but I've never tried this so I'm not sure on the specifics.

DSL modem. My PS3 is just plugged into a surge protector w/ t.v. dvr, dvd player, etc.(into wall outlet), not my PC(I only use PC 4 things like this blu-ray.com etc. R u saying I can not update directly from my PS3(I thought this was possible, does the PS3 not provide instructions 4 an update right on it, am I wrong?). Like I said I know nothing about PS3(tech.) but to play a bd or now, my 1st. PS3 game.

I think we are over thinking my situation(less complicated 4 me the better!) Thanx 4 any info u can give me!

Well yes you can update directly through the PS3, but that involves the PS3 being connected to the internet. You have to get the update file from somewhere.

I'm not even sure if the alternate process I described using a flash drive is possible. It seems like I read something about it online at one time quite a while back.

You might find the information at this link helpful.

Thanx Steve. I am on my PS3 & went to System Settings(says below, Adjust settings to this PS3 system) I punch that in comes up automatic update to the right says "off"(u can punch "on" if u want to, is this the update we have been talking about?). I have not done anything w/ the system since I have had it! Edit: Another says system update - select an update method update via internet or update via Storage Media(all this is foreign to me).

I'm not at home right now where I can get to my console so I can't experiment with any settings right now. IIRC I have that setting turned off in mine for some reason. I don't remember if I need a PS+ account or what, but I want to say it wouldn't let me turn it on. Even if you do turn it on, though, it won't be able to check for an update or download one without a connection to the internet. The PS3 console is really meant to be online in order to make full use of its features.

I got ya! I guess I am going to have to bone up on all the info(whether I like it or not) & look into investing in a wireless router(which is best IYO, would u check out the ones in BB?) or the wire(ether - do not know correct name) to connect to my PC(I really do not want to invest a lot of $$ in this PS3 project!). Welcome to the modern world - huh ! Again thanx for all ur help!!!

There are several good manufacturers of routers out there. The one I have is a Linksys and it serves me well. You don't need to spend a fortune on one. You can buy a router that will work well for you at Best Buy, Wal-Mart or Amazon. A basic wireless model sounds like all you need. What you will do is disconnect your modem from your PC and connect it to your router. Then you can run up to four cables out of most routers for wired connections or you can go the wireless route if the devices you want to connect are too far away to easily run a cable. Or you can do any combination of wired and wireless for your devices. It's really not that complicated. It just takes a little time to go through all the necessary steps. Once it's up and going though it's good to go. If you go to a place like Best Buy the employees there will be able to give you helpful information on getting everything set up.

First... you can't set the "automatic update" to on because you are not a PS+ subscriber. It's an extra service that needs to be paid for. And, given that you are likely not connected to the internet, you also likely are not a subscribed member.

Second... try selecting "Update via internet" and see what happens. If that doesn't work, then you definitely know your PS3 is not connected to the internet at all. If it updates, then you are done.

Third... if "Update via internet" didn't work, you will need to use a USB drive, download the update file using your PC, transfer that file onto the USB drive, plug the USB drive into your PS3, follow the same steps as above (Second...) except select "Update via storage media" instead.

Thanx Petra_Kalbrain for info(I have never owned a PS3 before(do I know what I got myself into? ) & I am $$ conscious). I am going to have to learn all this info & lingo though, not tech or computer savvy (never was taught any of this in school, back in the old days !!!).
