Default Why HD Digital released before Blu-ray?

Anyone know why they release the digital download version of movies before the blu-ray?
Doesn't it make sense for them to be all available at the same time?
For instance, Force Awakens, available April 1 for Digital on playstation store and vudu. But the Blu-ray isn't available until April 5.

Isn't it to try and get people to buy the movies via Digital as opposed to the discs?

Some (all?) studios are trying to push digital. The various services might also be paying to have some term of exclusivity.

The studios would rather you buy digital instead of disc for many reasons. The main reason is that they maintain control of the content, which is why I will never give up physical media.

it's stupid... as much as i want to rewatch the force awakens in the comfort of my own home, and as tempted as i am to buy the digital copy, i'll wait a few more days for the blu.(well, as of now, that's what i'm doing)

but, with most movies that's what i do, but hell, this is star wars...

I'd be happy to rent a digital release before the disc (and, arguably, that's all digital purchase really is) but there's no way I'm missing out on the disc.

It's the precursor to some releases only available on digital. It's already happening for many things if you have to have HD, where a dvd but no blu exists, and the digital copy is in HD.

I hate it, I'm fighting it, and I'm beginning to wonder if I'll someday regret selling all my codes. It's gonna take something extraordinary to make me give up discs and get into digital though.

Sales gimmick hoping you buy the digital to see it quicker and then buy the disc format after release date...2 sales r better than 1!

I think releasing digital before physical disc is just asking for more pirating opportunities. But I guess the studios "know" what they are doing.

Digital has it's place.

In a pinch if you are at home and your lady needs to see "said movie" and it's a matter of getting a digital copy instantly or killing the mood....definitely get the instant digital copy.

Personally, I'd rather wait for the hard copy. I would much rather have something physical to represent the money I spent.

This.

Nothing like physical content.

Default Force awakens

When it comes to Force Awakens I think I'm buying both. Just want to see it again Friday night and I'll still probably pick up the blu on Tuesday.

Because for better or worse, digital/streaming is the future of media. Content owners/distributors are going down the route where they're all coming out with their own platforms. In a few years, instead of cable, people will be subscribing to multiple Netflix-like services for various movies/tv shows.

Yeah, but it won't be the future of anything as long as they still charge 6 dollars for a new release rental in HD. Even going to a real store isn't that expensive to rent a Blu-Ray.
