Italy Le notti bianche (Luchino Visconti)

Le notti bianche Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Ripley and Cristaldi Film are bringing Luchino Visconti's [b]Le notti bianche (1957) to Blu-ray on March 20th.

In the U.S., the film is currently available on DVD via the Criterion collection.

**Cristaldi's old DVD release was not English-friendly.

It's a shame it probably won't be English friendly. Maybe Criterion will upgrade it at some point, but they have so many films in their catalogue that could be upgraded now and have such a slow upgrade rate that I'm not that hopeful. I would absolutely love MoC to release this!

Early info (via email) indicates that this release will be English-friendly.

Whether this turns out to be case, I do not know yet. I am only passing the info that is sent to the press.

The Amazon.it listing states English subtitles! I hope this is true!

Pro-B, will you be reviewing this release?

Hi RDA, we need to confirm that the English subs are on the release, and if they are, we are guaranteed to have a review for it

The Amazon.it listing now doesn't list English subtitles, and the back cover doesn't list them either. So it's looking like the release does not have English subtitles unfortunately, but can someone confirm this?

The old Cristaldi DVD featured English subtitles, so we may be confident this BD will be English-friendly, too.

The release DOES NOT appear to be English-friendly.

I have uploaded the back cover.

Yes, it was. Being a new user I cannot upload screenshots, but I have my Cristaldi DVD in the player right now and I can confirm the old DVD is English-friendly.

Maybe you have a re-release (quite a few of Cristaldi's DVDs were rereleased), but I can state with absolute certainty that the first DVD release was not English-friendly

Yes, I think that you have this release (see below). Before this disc, there was another one:

As far as I can see there were only two Italian releases: 2004 Cristaldi/Fox and 2007 Cristaldi/Dolmen, and both had English subs...

The very first Cristaldi releases were very simple, just plain black and white covers (see below). Then they changed the covers with some blue colors. I am unsure if it had something to do with Fox-Italia distributing them.

The images you posted refer to a budget collection sold with newspapers in Italian newstands circa 2005-2006. But that was simply a budget re-issue of the 2004 Cristaldi/Fox DVDs, mantaining English subtitles where available.

I definitely did not purchase these discs with newspapers in Italy, and I had them before 2005.

On cover, you can spot the Hobby & Work trademark, and they only sell their DVDs in newstands... I do have the same Riso amaro/Bitter Rice release, and if you check the silver stamp it clearly reads "abbinamento editoriale", which actually means "to be sold with magazine/newspaper".

I understand But I was not in Italy. These discs were purchased online.

Also, my Riso Amaro disc comes with a booklet. In there the date attached to the ISBN is July 23, 2003.

The reason I know that there were earlier releases is because I obtained these discs in a large batch with other titles, and I remember very well that Visconti's film was one of them. Much later on, after I had checked which ones were English-friendly, a specialty e-vendor in the U.S. started selling the English-friendly ones (this was 2005/06). For some of them I wrote reviews. The Italian-language only titles I could not review and did not keep.

Anyhow, this is very old information.
